I can't remember the name, but did you ever read one of those teach yourself books? They'd have a section explaining something, then a multiple choice question directing you to three or four different pages. You zig-zagged through the book.

I do remember that all that "chat" stuff appeared twice. Once I realized, I'd just page past until I got to the text iteration, but it surely was a mess! I never investigated the interior of the book, so I have no idea what the code was like. |

<figure> (and the other HTML5 block elements) work just fine in epub3 on my ADE 2.0.1.78765 install! On my PC, on my Kobo, and on my Sony PRS-T2 for that matter. Oh, also in the Nook android app. I'm digitizing (slowly) some of my rare books to epub so that I can re-read them as my eyes age, and many are illustrated, so I use <figure> and <figcaption> quite frequently. |

I also use ADE 2.01 for downloading books from Kobo (and stripping the DRM), so yeah, I've looked at some of my purchases and do know they are, in fact, epub 3. It is the ONLY ADE install on my machine, so there's not even a possibility that I'm accidentally using a more advanced ADE. Guess what? Many publishers are making epub3 now. Yet, they stand to lose big time if their epub3s aren't backward compatible and can't be read on older devices, of which there are many still in use. They use HTML5 tags like <figure> and <figcaption> and <section>, etc... with no issue. If the CSS specifies display:block; for <figure>, ADE displays it as a block element. What more you want, I couldn't say. Why you are having trouble getting it to work, I don't know. |

![]() Can you show me a <figure> that works with ADE 2.0.1? It has to have a class and do something that would only display correctly if it's working. |

I was under the impression that you neither believe much in epub3 nor make them. If you are trying to test an HTML5 element in an epub2, I'm not sure it would work! So don't do that! Grab any purchase or freebie you have that is epub3 (I know you know how to strip DRM.), make a copy. Open it in Sigil or Calibre editor. Add a <figure> somewhere, between paragraphs, appropriately styled, and an image, or some text within and maybe some margins. Do the same with a <div> and style identically. Probably best to put your added CSS tail end of whatever the publisher has done. They should look identical when opened in ADE 2.0.1. Code:
<figure class="your class"> <p>Some text here</p> <img src="add source here"/> <figcaption>More text here</figcaption> </figure> <div class="your class"> <p>Some text here</p> <img src="add source here"/> <p class="caption">More text here</p> </div> CSS: Code:
figure, figcaption {display: block;} Otherwise, I don't think I have anything that is public domain handy right now, I could make something, but I don't have a lot of spare time today. My time on the computer is limited, my spine can't take tons of sitting, my eyes can't take tons of computer display. I know you understand CSS, so you ought to be able to figure this one out. |

That <figcaption> seems to be of limited utility.

Same result as I get on ADE 2.0.1. The version of RMSDK used on Kobo is too old. The only Reader that's running an up-to-date RMSDK is Pocketbook.

Try this and tell me if it works for you. CSS Code:
body { widows: 1; orphans: 1; margin-top: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-bottom: 0; margin-left: 0; text-align: justify; } img { max-height: 100%; max-width: 100%; } figure.cover { text-align: center; text-indent: 0; height: 100%; } Code:
<figure class="cover"> <img alt="" class="cover" src="cover image here"/> </figure> |

With all due respect, sure, we use ADE 2.01 to check the odd thing here and there, but AFAIK, nobody is still using that to read. I mean...come on. Even those of us in the Curmudgeon Class have to move on at SOME point. Hitch |

Well, ADE 2.0.1 does <figure> just fine for epub3 as long as I tell it that <figure>, along with <aside><section><nav><figcaption> etc... are to be displayed as block elements. Major publishing houses that do epub3 do the same darn thing, so that their epub3s work on older devices. One also needs both toc.ncx and nav.xhtml for backward compatible navigation. Here's an epub3 for you, which has an illustration towards the end of Chapter 1. I put it in there twice, once with <figure><figcaption>, once with <div><p>. Two classes, .illustration and .caption. The captions themselves will tell you which is which, otherwise, there's no visual difference in ADE 2.0.1. The text and illustrations are public domain material in the USA and also in Mobile Read terms. Leo Edwards died in 1944 and Bert Salg in 1938. The book was first published in 1926. The title is Poppy Ott and the Stuttering Parrot. Two chapters worth. It's a little rough, as I threw it together fast. But you asked, so here ya go: |
