China Mieville's "The City and the City"

I just finished reading Mieville's (of Perdido Street Station fame) new book The City and the City and it was good. In fact, it was very fascinating and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Perhaps this sounds a bit of a milquetoast endorsement - well, it is. It's good, hell... it's great for most fantasy, but compared to Perdido it just didn't have the sheer power of that book and other things I've read of his. It is very much a strange detective story but the mysterious you want to know the most are not at all answered.

So, if you like strange detective novels this is the book for you. I'd recommend it to urban fantasy fans as well, but don't expect much in the way of magic - thing more... weird. But if you're a big fan of Mieville's, try to contain your excitement. I enjoyed the book, I looked forward to having some time to read it, but it wasn't quite the experience I had hoped for.
