Nesbit, Edith: The Wonderful Garden (Illus) v1. 28 September 2015

THE WONDERFUL GARDEN by Edith Nesbit (1858–1924)
With all 48 original illustrations by Harold R. Millar (1869–1940)
With a glossary for young readers

First published in 1911.
The text and illustrations of this book are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA. Additional material and cover design released under the Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial ShareAlike 4.0 License.

This edition is The Wonderful Garden as it was serialized in The Strand Magazine Jan–Nov 1911. The serial is somewhat abridged from the book. I believe this is the very first time this story is offered as a formatted and annotated ebook for legitimate free download.

-------------
Edith Nesbit Bland, English author and poet, published approximately 40 books for children under the name of E. Nesbit. Her innovative body of work influenced many subsequent fantasy writers.

* * * * *

It all begins with the gift of a book, “The Language of Flowers,” which explains the deep meanings of flowers…

The three Stanmore children go to spend the summer holidays with Great-Uncle Charles in his beautiful old house. Then they learn they have a witch for an ancestor, find her hidden books of magic, and begin to use flowers and herbs in spells and charms as good influences on those around them. Is it only coincidence that the spells seem to be working?

-------------
Text and illustrations were obtained from archive.org scans of The Strand Magazine. Punctuation formatted and Anglicized; some spelling modernized and standardized. Embedded fonts for titles, drop-caps, and text inserts.

A glossary has been added for young readers, annotating some terms no longer in general use, or in use primarily in the UK.

-------------
I really enjoyed building this book. I hope it finds a happy home with you.

At first view to the pictures it seems to be like Burnett "The Secret Garden". I'm curious about the differences.

@AnotherCat --- you are most welcome, hope you enjoy the book!

@faltradl --- I didn't find any real similarity to "Secret Garden." I think that one has a much deeper and more serious theme -- not that "The Secret Garden" is totally "serious," but that its meaning runs deeper. This one is more of a light romp where the three siblings explore the possibilities of magic spells. (The snobby footman in the chapter "The Mineral Woman" is a hoot!)
