Interesting! Dark mode does not seem integral to note taking or stylus use. Will the firmware of other Kobos be updated to include it?

The Elipsa screen has the fancy dark-mode specific waveform modes as previously seen on Kindle, so, if it ever gets ported to earlier devices, don't expect it to look any good, the best they can do is keep handling images sanely.

I am fairly sure Kobo won't be creating the new waveform for older devices. And that lack is one of the reasons they haven't done a dark-mode officially before. They do not believe it would give a good experience. Hopefully, all future devices will get it.

(I'm cynical enough to say that I'm not even sure it looks that good even *with* white-on-black waveform modes, but, alas, it seems mildly popular nonetheless ^^). |

I tried doing some web searches for the described Kindle display feature, but couldn't find the right keywords. edit: reading davidfor's post again, I'm guessing this is entirely software-based? Last edited by pickyaxe; 06-26-2021 at 12:06 AM. |

Firmware 4.28.17826
Annotation syncing between this firmware and the previous firmware seems broken. I’m not yet sure what sync behavior to expect from handwritten notations scribbled onto the page, but highlights are definitely not syncing anymore. Anybody else notice this? On the upside, changes to collections sync just fine.
Update: this may not be a new problem introduced with 4.28.17826. I just tested annotations between my Clara running 4.26.16704 and my iPad’s Kobo app (v9.25), and only bookmarks are transferred. The current page and highlights are no longer synced. I just hadn’t noticed it before. (I simply don’t understand why Kobo struggles with annotation parity between devices.) @pickyaxe: You can't? It's part of the waveform tweaking services e-Ink itself offers to its partner, AFAIK (aka., NDA-land).
As a gross oversimplification, instead of being tweaked for black on white, it's tweaked for white on black. (Note that on Kindle, there are also extra trickery involving how the flashes are dealt with, and the frontlight level. I haven't seen traces of any of that here, but I haven't looked into it all that much, and I haven't had the device in front of me either ). |

I used to be annoyed by not being able to check on the charge from inside a book. Now just clicking on it gives the charge of the reader AND whether the stylus' battery is ok or not (I don't know whether it was already so in the previous Elipsa F/w).

I’ve tried updating to this firmware on a backup Forma, which was successful. However adding darkmode=True under ReadingSettings does nothing.
Just wanted to see how this looked compared to the dark mode we currently have (I assume mostly the same save that images won’t be inverted) |
