Profit?
Possibly simply didn't realise that app sales are not paid instantly?

Or that his scam was small-scale enough that people wouldn't notice immediately?

Not a puny scam by any accounts....
In 2007, TJ Maxx's credit card processing protocol resulted in the compromise of 45 million CC numbers. This Apple exploit is at least 0.0008% the size of that one. If it was 4,000 users instead of 400, it'd be 0.008%.

Or, there are at least 10 million iTunes accounts, meaning 0.004% of all users got nailed.

The rogue developer likely didn't get anything, since Apple only pays once a month; the CC companies will reverse the fraudulent charges. It appears that almost no one lost anything as a result, except Apple lost a bit of face.

Do you prefer the term "miniscule?"

The hacking a month ago was NOT done thru phishing - AE told me it was some teenagers hacking into Apple. They didn't actually have my credit card number, according to AE, so no worries about anything other than itunes purchases.
