Samsung preps 5.5-inch flexible phone screen for CES demo

Samsung preps 5.5-inch flexible phone screen for CES demo

In January, Samsung's mobile display spinoff will bring us a step closer to bendable smartphones. Now that's twisted.
by Jessica Dolcourt December 19, 2012 2:35 PM PST

"You won't have to bend over backward to see Samsung's latest effort in flexible smartphone screens.

Samsung Display, a spinoff from Samsung Electronics, will show off a pair of bendable screens at CES that could one day appear in a radically new smartphone or TV design, according to company representatives.

This greatly help make more rugged devices with screens.
Even help pocket devices that get bent.

Question is price add on.

Ah, but do the electronics bend as well to power the screen?

I think that the most promising part of this development would having a phone in your pocket that becomes a tablet by simply unfolding the screen. You can use it as a phone (screen folded) and, when you need the extra real estate, you unfold it and get a much larger screen to play with.

I assume more "unroll", "roll" screen than "fold","unfold" screen,

Right angle bends 90 deg should be difficult.
180 deg greatly difficult
very small radius curvature would be gigantic problem

I want a reflective display that can be folded in half -- a 10" ereader that I can carry around in my coat pocket like my kindle. The battery can be fitted inside one of the rigid halves and the electronics inside the other.

I can't see this being much more than a horrible gimmick. Can't wait for the tears about the bending fatigue. Sweet salty tears.

To make rugged, hardy, tough screens will be good.
To reduce large screen to small size, not so good.

These estimates based on current state of technology.
In first days of crt screens who envisioned lcd screens?
