Amazon PW cover - magnet

Can somebody explain something to me? On the Amazon PW cover that automatically turns on when you open the cover, is it just a magnet that makes it do that? If so, if I want to use a different cover without this feature, could I glue a small magnet on the outer edge and it'll work the same way? I tried touching the side of my Kindle with plain refrigerator magnets and it doesn't do anything. Is the magnet not strong enough? I don't understand how this works. Thanks!

Yes it's a magnet but a very strong one. I have to keep anything metal far away from it or it will grab it. I don't think a Kitchen magnet is going to work.

My son just came over and he helped me figure it out. The magnet in the PW is on the lower right corner. It just so happened we had a tiny little round magnet that he had taken out of an iPad cover he had, so we used that....works like a charm! So now I have a beautiful Oberon cover with the auto on/off feature. I'm happy
