Amazon in the Kobo business?
Amazon is offering Kobos (Aura, Clara, H2O and Forma) for the same price Walmart is selling them for (except for the Aura, it's selling for $100), all available by Tuesday where I live, with free 90 day Amazon support (whatever that amounts to) and the option of financing them for 6 months on the Amazon Rewards Visa Card. What's the deal with that?

The Kobo I saw was sold by a third party seller, and fulfilled by Amazon.

They got told off in UK for the payment page. So now on UK Market place they only serve it to Irish Customers (who despite Euro are sent to UK Sterling site with Amazon hedged conversions only at checkout, I cancel that and pay in sterling) Spot the real check out link? It's the small blue text to the left of the button. It's called Dark Arts UX and is immoral. |

They're not listing them as out of stock, they dropped themselves as a seller. If you hadn't spotted them, we would never have known. |

They've had the Clara on sale, off and on, for a while now. What surprised me last night was to see three other models sold and shipped by Amazon. It just seems odd that Amazon is selling any Kobos at all.

They may make more money selling the Kobo HW, though obviously Kindles help sell Amazon eBooks and nothing else other than Kindle Apps do.
All their retail is small change now compared to renting out server time like 1960s, except it's misnamed the Cloud now. Perhaps an experiment or a mistake! |

Amazon carry B&N Nook devices, too. It's not odd at all. It's profit. It's kind of like the cereal aisle at the grocery: national brands next to store brands.

Amazon sells Apple devices as well, and those from Samsung and many other major tech companies. Apple, Samsung, and others all compete against Amazon in areas like the Fire Tablets. I bought my MacBook Pro through Amazon a while back and paid $100 less than Apple was selling it for plus got it delivered for free in half the time. The good thing about Amazon is they often include competitors' devices in their store/website. They definitely make money off of those devices by selling and delivering them, so why should they exclude them? It makes good business sense, so it shouldn't surprise us at all. How many other companies can actually say they make money by selling the goods from a competing company?

The Fire Tablet is a crippled Android tablet.
The main competitor to Amazon is Google*. They even fell out with Google pulling features from Amazon products because Google was unhappy with Amazon's store advert policies. [* Cloud hosting, aka Rent a server like 1960s, the vast bulk of Amazon's income is now from hosting. The Fire TV stick competes with Google Chromecast but uses Google services!] Last edited by Quoth; 11-04-2019 at 12:10 PM. Reason: Clarify |

Iirc, Amazon doesn't sell Google Home and the new Google Nest WiFi. They only have the router version and not the access point as the AP has Google Assistant built-in. Amazon has an exclusive Google Nest WiFi router 2-pack because the 2-pack from other sellers include router + AP/speaker. That said, hoping they carry the Libra H2O. |
