I would imagine it's something that the marketing folks told them to put in as a selling feature. I doubt, though, that it's using more than a couple of hundred kb of firmware space at most. Hardly noticeable on the newer model with 512MB of space .

I was actually trying to visualise what hardware was involved...soundcard? wiring to the buttons, that sort of thing...

Presumably there must be a digital to analogue converter chip involved, but that probably costs pennies these days.

Aye, but take that out and there'll be a slot for even more memory (for instance)...

never used it, and I thing I'm never going to.

I have an iPod, and several other devices that can read mp3 (cellphones, pen drives, etc), that are better than a CyBook for music and audiobooks, and handier as well.

As I use the CyBook exclusively as an eBook reader (that's what it is, isn't it?), mainly in mobipocket format, programmable buttons in the new firmware would be welcomed, so to "recycle" the music and the volume unused bottons.

I also don't use the MP3 player and never will - got an iPod nano and a MP3 car headunit for audiobooks and music.
