Quote:
The weathered remains found on a Scottish mountainside may be those of Eleanor Gray, but the imperious Lady Maude Gray, Eleanor's mother, will have to be handled delicately. This is not the only ground that Inspector Ian Rutledge of Scotland Yard must tread carefully, for the case will soon lead him to Scotland, where many of Rutledge's ghosts rest uneasily. But it is an unexpected encounter that will hold the most peril.

For in Scotland Rutledge will find that the young mother accused of killing Eleanor Gray is a woman to whom he owes a terrible debt. And his harrowing journey to find the truth will lead him back through the fires of his past, into secrets that still have the power to kill.

The Huckleberry Murders is the fourth in the Sheriff Bo Tully series by Patrick F. McManus. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003UYURWY
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...eberry-murders

Spoiler:
Quote:
Sheriff Bo Tully is the brand of western lawman who uses as much cunning and guile on the ladies as he does solving his cases. He’s a man with a sense of humor and a hunch for the truth, which comes in handy when trying to capture killers and establish order in Blight County.

As the novel opens, Sheriff Tully is following up on one of his famous hunches: he suspects the murder of local retiree Orville Poulson by his ranch caretaker, Ray Crockett, a sociopath with a criminal record. The only problem is, Tully has no evidence or body to prove that a crime has been committed—supposedly Orville is alive and well and cashing his Social Security checks from Spokane.

Meanwhile, a far more alarming case emerges. Three young men have been shot, each in the back of the head, execution style, in a huckleberry patch on Scotchman Mountain, leaving behind no identification. With the help of confident and beautiful FBI agent Angela Phelps, Tully tries to connect the dots between Poulson’s disappearance, the sudden spate of murders occurring in Blight County, and a big white pickup truck with dual tires causing havoc and crime. As the few potential leads are either killed off or prove nearly impossible to track down, Tully must follow his instincts to piece together the puzzle of who is doing the killing, and why. His suspicions lead him straight into a haunted swamp, along with Agent Phelps, his womanizing ex-sheriff father, Pap, expert tracker and good friend Dave, and mountain man Poke. A twisty case packed with murder and mystery, The Huckleberry Murders is the most entertaining tale yet in this beloved series.

Fletch (first in series) by Gregory McDonald is at 0.99

Fletch, investigative reporter extraordinaire, can’t be bothered with deadlines or expense-account budgets when it comes to getting his story.

Working undercover at the beach to dig up a drug-trafficking scheme for his next blockbuster piece, Fletch is invited into a much deeper narrative. Alan Stanwyk, CEO of Collins Aviation and all-around family man, mistakes the reporter for a strung-out vagabond and asks him for a favor: kill him and escape to Brazil with $50,000. Intrigued, Fletch can’t help but dig into this suspicious deal he’s being offered.

Dodging the shady beach police as his case begins to break open, and with his temperamental editor Clara pushing for his article, he soon discovers that Stanwyk has a lot to hide and this plan is anything but what it seems.

Here Comes the Bribe is the second-most-recent (2016) in Mary Daheim's Bed-and-Breakfast series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/here-comes-the-bribe-2

Quote:
Judith McMonigle Flynn has her hands full with unexpected family ties and a dead body in the backyard in this delightfully zany mystery in Mary Daheim’s popular Bed-and-Breakfast series.

Rodney Schmuck and his wife, Millie, Hillside Manor’s latest guests, seem normal, well, except for that last name. Innkeeper Judith McMonigle Flynn is touched to hear that the fortysomething couple is in town to visit family. Rodney is especially eager to see his long-lost mother—who he insists is Judith. Shocked to meet an alleged son she’s sure she never had, she can’t believe Rodney when he swears he has proof from a Norway General Hospital birth certificate listing Judith Anne Grover as his mother.

The father’s name is Unknown.

Judith has never heard of Rodney, let alone given him life. But she’s got a bigger problem when one of the B&B guests turns up dead in the backyard. To Judith’s surprise, Joe is willing to help investigate. He can’t ignore a potential homicide that hits so close to home.

But Rodney is seeking compensation for Judith’s so-called abandonment of him. Perhaps she’ll sign over Hillside Manor? Fat chance of that, Judith declares, and wonders what kind of scheme Rodney has on his devious mind. For that matter, she also wonders why the rest of the guests in his party are acting so strangely. With Joe hot on the killer’s trail, Cousin Renie is persuaded to help Judith discover the truth about the Schmucks and their mysterious hangers-on. If they don’t act fast, Hillside Manor could end up as Schmucks’ Gold Mine.

Fire in The Thatch: A Devon Mystery by E. C. R. Lorac, pen name for Carol Carnac, itself a pen name for Edith Caroline Rivett (at least according to SYKM), is £0.99 today as part of the UK Kindle Daily Deal. Thatch is about half way through Lorac's Robert Macdonald series.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fire-Thatch...dp/B079HXJL22/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Second World War is drawing to a close. Nicholas Vaughan, released from the army after an accident, takes refuge in Devon renting a thatched cottage in the beautiful countryside at Mallory Fitzjohn. Vaughan sets to work farming the land, rearing geese and renovating the cottage. Hard work and rural peace seem to make this a happy bachelor life. On a nearby farm lives the bored, flirtatious June St Cyres, an exile from London while her husband is a Japanese POW. June s presence attracts fashionable visitors of dubious character, and threatens to spoil Vaughan's prized seclusion. When Little Thatch is destroyed in a blaze, all Vaughan s work goes up in smoke and Inspector Macdonald is drafted in to uncover a motive for murder.

Yes, quite a few. Pretty typical of golden age mysteries. Several available to borrow at Open Library.

Inspector Macdonald is one of her favourites.

HOWEVER, writing as she did over the war years and after, the usual 'interference' of rationing, blackout etc. sometimes gets in the way of the story: not her fault, just those of the times.

But worth investigating . . . . .

and 'fire in the thatch' is one of the better ones, despite being a 'wartime' one

If the Dead Rise Not is the 6th in the Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/If-Dead-Ris...dp/B002WIG3PE/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Bernie Gunther's sixth outing delivers all the hard-boiled, fast-paced and quick-witted action we expect of him. Berlin is preparing to host the 1936 Olympics, and Jews are being expelled from all German sporting organisations.

Bernie Gunther, forced to resign as a homicide detective with Berlin's Criminal Police, is now house detective at the famous Adlon Hotel. Two bodies are found - a businessman and a Jewish boxer, and Bernie is drawn into the lives of various hotel guests. One, beautiful left-wing journalist, is intent on persuading America to boycott the Olympiad. The other, a Chicago gangster, wants to use the Olympics to enrich himself and the Chicago mob.

As events unfold, Bernie uncovers a vast network of corruption and racketeering, led by those who want a slice of the fortune the Nazis are spending to showcase Germany to the world.
