B&N Drops Blackberry app

The speculation is that it's too expensive to maintain. Seems odd to drop a source of content sales though.

Also, look at the rapidly dwindling RIM marketshare. 3 months ago RIM had 24.7% of the marketshare, and now they're at 19.7%. That's a full 5 percent drop in only 3 months. Given that RIM insiders haven't reported buying RIM stock since July 2010, that makes people wonder how long there will be Blackberries. Also, the Playbook has performed miserably, and it appears that they've killed development of other tablets.

Given all of the above, it really doesn't surprise me. Why support a device that is tanking fast, and is considered shaky even by those on the inside?

That was an eReader based app right? It's possible that they'll come out with a regular Nook app for Blackberry (as opposed to B&N eReader) as they did for other platforms after retiring those eReader apps and that this is because they don't want to support eReader files through B&N anymore (like they don't on the newer Nooks).

What the article said was:
Quote:
No reason is offered by the bookseller but it is telling that even though it already has the app on the BlackBerry, and it allows purchasing content from B&N, it is no longer going to let that happen. Perhaps the company finds it too expensive to maintain and support the BlackBerry. It is a drastic measure to kill a platform that can currently purchase content.
Blackberry is shifting from its current BB OS to QNX (aka Playbook) OS for all upcoming phones. It has already stated no new phones will be released with BB OS. That means B&N would have to re-engineer the Nook app for the new OS and decided it didn't have the development money to do so. B&N is very, very strapped for cash and is eyeing every savings it can while it builds marketshare for Nook.

And, the Playbook QNX OS is about to be refreshed with 2.0 (third week Oct) which will include an Android apps layer. B&N will still be able to support Blackberry using that.
