Here is an article that goes into a little more depth. It looks like it is some kind of technology that is related to Google's method of providing books that aren't tied to a device.

I found a link to a FAQ that describes their technology. It looks like it is an XML based alternative to ePub.

This probably has something to do with their Google bookstore. I'm gonna be that they are looking into making their own ereader to further boost their sales.

eReader *app* most likely.
It's a bit late to be getting into the dedicated hardware game for ePubs.

Could also be to find the *people* they need to run their ebook store. Buying companies is a way to but tech or products, but it is also a way to recruit high caliber personnel.
