Barnes & Noble’s New Comeback Plan
Barnes & Noble Inc. has a plan to enliven the slumping bookstore chain: adding restaurants that serve beer and wine.
The four new concept stores will open in Eastchester, New York; Edina, Minnesota; Folsom, California; and Loudon, Virginia. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/barnes...201141759.html Apache |

I would drink to that but none is within driving distance of me.
The nearest Borders ended up repurposed as a PF Chang's so B&N is getting a good headstart on their life after books. |

The Loudoun location is still a hole in the ground, and the Edina store is already open.

This seems like a silly idea. Restaurants are if anything riskier than bookstores. Yet I gather the stock price went up.

their stock usually goes up when they make some sort of positive plan. Then they fail to execute that plan, or fail to execute it well and the stock comes crashing back down.

So, B&N, who can't seem to make money in the business they are actually in, are going to try in a business they have no idea about.
A restaurant, especially a big one (which is what these are going to have to be in order to make enough money to 'save' a national listed company), is a lot different than running cafes in bookstores. Maybe they think that B&N customers have to be drunk in order to buy books there... |

I swore I'd never buy another thing from B&N. Now I've got a $49+ credit. I won't buy ebooks from them but I can print the document I've received and I'll spend all/most of it at a B&M store and then wave goodbye as I cross the parking lot. Good riddance.

So, do you have to pay for the book before you bring it into the restaurant?

Of course, most of the diners will just assume that they're there for atmosphere. In fact, I bet most diners would be surprised that they were real books and not the ones like Ikea uses. |
