Download from Kindle Reader to Calibre stopped

Hi,

As of 9 am Pacific Time, all my downloads from my Kindle Reader to Calibre have stopped converting and opening. The error message at Calibre is:

I have not changed any settings and have the most current edition of Calibre. I bought 17 books from Amazon today. All bought before 9 am downloaded and converted. The rest got error message above. What happened?

The book you are trying to convert is in KFX format. It cannot be processed by calibre.

Look up Apprentice Alf's blog for help on how to deal with this.

Hi,

What I do not understand is that in 15 months of using Calibre, I've never downloaded any book in KFX format. I've downloaded over 800 books. In today's case, I downloaded a book at 8:59 and it went fine. I downloaded the sequel at 9:01 and it was in KFX format. Amazon must have done something.

Your Kindle for PC probably automatically updated to the latest version which now allows downloading KFX files for those devices that can use it. There are a couple of threads about this in here.

You might be able to uninstall your Kindle for PC and download an older version. This is discussed in those other threads. I also saw a link to a site that has them available to download. I don't recall if it was in one of those threads or while googling this topic, but it is there.

If you do install an older version be sure to turn off automatic updating. That's probably what caused your problem.

Another solution is to register a device that can't read KFX files and then download the file to transfer it to that device. Calibre will then be able to convert it. If I recall correctly the Paperwhite first generation is the latest Kindle that can't handle KFX.
