The Amazon format doesn't work on the KOBO.

But you can, of course, strip the DRM and use Calibre to convert the books into epub for the Kobo.

Also, I've heard people mention here on MR that Amazon DOES have an option for authors to opt for a DRM-FREE release? In which case you wouldn't have to bother with stripping the DRM. I imagine these books are the small minority, but worth mentioning.

I have seen a DRM free .LIT file (The format that the Kindle uses) and I was able to use Calibre to make a Kobo compatible .ePub file.

I'm pretty sure .LIT files are 'Microsoft Reader' files techie... not related to Amazon at all.

Their main format is AZW. Its other semi-primary? formats are unprotected Mobi books (.PRC, .MOBI)

I wonder, bob5146, if you have checked out prices and titles at Kobobooks. It's a pretty extensive line-up, sometimes cheaper than Amazon (it certainly often is in Canada since Amazon charges abt $2 per title for hidden Whispernet delivery charges). Plus, those titles are backed up in your personal e-library at Kobo and transfer directly to your Kobo so they can be read right away.

No muss, no fuss. Now that you have a Kobo, why not enjoy the benefits of the Kobo bookstore?

The Kindle does not use MS Reader format. It uses AZW which is a modified Mobipocket and Topaz which is less then useless.

The Kindle can also handle DRM free Mobipocket format.

Totally agree.

But then, I'm kind of biased.

Only problem I've seen is you guys are sometimes on the slow side for price changes. Of course that's only a problem when the price is supposed to go down, keeping them to low is OK.

if you bought them on the kobo book store, consider using the Kobo Desktop Application and syncing your Kobo eReader through that. You will not have problems with the fonts.

You currently only get problems with font resizing if you download the EPUB version of the book and transfer it to the kobo ereader through ADE.
