Jobs confirms DRM free epub books can be loaded and read via iBooks on iPad
article here http://gizmodo.com/5500131/steve-jobs-using-his-ipad
basically he confirms that yes you willbe able to readall of your epub books(drmless) on the iPad with iBooks. I had always assumed this would be possible but its a massive plus for it as a device for reading ebooks. would be great to have an app that could access all of MR's epubs! |

That is good news but it's still a no go for me since I won't be able to use the iPad to read library books.

Cool exchange (Steve Jobs writing from his iPad!) And thanks for noticing this. It's good to know.

I assumed this would be the case.
Apple just wants as many people to get the iPad as possible and use that to buy more movies/tv/books/comics/apps/music. It needs to catch all of those people currently using other e-book devices. |

Good news on the epub front. I just hope that apps like Stanza and PDF Reader will have iPad versions for many other formats as well. (Especially pdfs which often do not translate well to epub).

but there is no indication that you WONT be able to read ADE books on the device using an app which im sure Apple will approve.(it is already on iPhone after all) so in effect Apple are seemingly open to letting ANY content work on the iPad which is a bit of a departure from how they USED to act and how many people seem to think th iPad will work. |

I personally feel apple would of been happy to not bother with any DRM but publishers insisted and they didnt want to have an external companies DRM to pay for when they have their own! so.... |

Enough with the Adobe DRM. Amazon has 90% of the ebook market and doesn't use Adobe DRM. Adobe DRM is a proprietary product and not an industry standard. Adobe is trying to make money selling their product, and that's fine. But I don't fault anyone for refusing to put Adobe in the center of the universe.

Amazon's share of the ebook market is expected to fall dramatically over the next five years, with figures of 90% down to 35% suggested:
http://blogs.wsj.com/marketbeat/2010...5/tab/article/ Above I actually said "an industry standard" rather than specifically saying Adobe, but I'll argue the point anyway. Adobe Adept has become the de facto industry standard, in that the vast majority of bookshops are using it, as are public libraries. The fact that the Kindle format currently enjoys more sales doesn't alter that. It's not a standard if it is tied to one sales outlet. We all want DRM confined to the dustbin, except presumably for library loans, but given that the publishers are insisting on DRM, as Tamara notes, it is irritating - for iPad owners - that Apple chooses to slap yet another variant on their books. People who don't own iPads have their choice of store reduced by one (one that doesn't yet exist), so not too big a problem. iPad owners will need to have multiple apps to read their books if they choose to use both their own Apple store and the majority of other shops. Stustaff's point about the cost is a good one - I hadn't realised just how much Adobe were charging - but Apple will still have internal salary costs to maintain their Fairplay DRM for books as well as movies, and deal with the book-specific issues. Tamara - Oh come on. It's one thing to be an Apple fan, but their control-freak nature is really quite apparent these days. |

Has anyone heard anything definitive about whether the iBook app/store will be available on the iPhone as well? I'm not seeing anything except speculation in a Google search.

You can't be an "industry standard" if you don't have the main players -- and Amazon is THE main player. Adobe is TRYING to make their product "the standard" -- but there's no reason other company's should assist them.
The kindle has sold just fine without Adobe DRM. So will Apple. That Adobe is the "standard for libraries" is different that "the standard for all ebooks". Publishers demand DRM, Apple already has it's own DRM, no reason to shell out millions of dollars into a competitor's pocket. Lee |
