Kindle Touch Remote Brick?
I got FW 5.3.2.1 recently. I was looking around in the source of the password dialog box, and saw something that scared me a little. First, in /usr/share/webkit-1.0/pillow/javascripts/password_dialog.js:
Code:
isDeviceBricked : "" Code:
brickedDialogTitle : "Passcode Required" ... brickedDialogText : "This device has been remotely disabled." Does anyone know what this remote brick/disable is all about? Last edited by virtualdxs; 04-03-2013 at 01:53 AM. Reason: Layout |

IF we knew, we would have been.
Have you tried tracing it back yourself. I suppose grepping the entire image for the word brick is a start. Incidentally: I have 3 kids, They don't get any extra sweets for stamping their feet. Yes, Intriguing, Don't know. Now, stow the grumpy face? What would you have us do? That you didn't / couldn't ? Open to suggestions. |

^ what twobob said. If somebody here knew exactly what this is, they would have answered. The first replies that you received were simply jokes (because both Kubrick and BBB could help in such a situation) - but maybe you don't have the same sense of humor.
Anyway: I assume that this is something related to Amazon being able to lock a device if it has been reported as stolen. Or something like that. Just speculating, but that's what it looks like to me. |

I second that thought on "stolen lockdown", But of course that kinda went without saying. Right?
If there was more, we would of course share it. |

No kids here -
But barking at me in their outdoor voice does not get my dogs anything special either. Until someone (yourself maybe?) can run down what those fields are used for in the JavaScript - the original two suggestions remain: 1) Keep a copy of KUBRICK handy - it will undo any remote changes as a result of doing its primary job. 2) Install KUAL and the KUAL BBB (Block Big Brother) firewall, leave the BBB filter enabled. Those three suggestions are all the help that is available at this time. Short answer (translated): We don't know. |

I know that it's not the stolen thing. That only prevents registration. And about that, can't you just change the serial no. in diags mode? It's just a serial number blacklist.

And what can I use to search for text in the whole image?

At the risk of sounding marmish I tend to avoid discussion around that subject entirely.
Even well intentioned dissemination of information like that tends to facilitate ne'r-do-wells rather than Joe Blow. And Joe Blow is who we help here. But back on-topic. Did you dd off the rootfs and do a grep? I feel an "on device" search of that nature would result in a hang... but nothing to stop you poking around offline. |

The way to answer your topic question is to learn what things reference those fields and under what conditions. The way to make the topic question not relevant has already been answered. I.E: Be prepared to replace any altered image with a good image and/or prevent communications between the device and Amazon. There is no reason (on this forum) to aid people using devices that where reported stolen - that is and should remain, between the device owner and Amazon. |

I would be fine with that except for that Amazon has Kindle Specialists who think a KT will factory reset after 3 failed password attempts and a dev team that renders a Kindle useless if reported stolen, with no way to unblacklist it.
