The Anvil of the World is her first fantasy novel, a journey across a landscape filled with bizarre creatures, human and otherwise. It is the tale of Smith, of the large extended family of Smiths, of the Children of the Sun. They are a race given to blood feuds, and Smith was formerly an extremely successful assassin. Now he has wearied of his work and is trying to retire in another country, to live an honest life in obscurity in spite of all those who have sworn to kill him.

His problems begin when he agrees to be the master of a caravan from the inland city of Troon to the seaside city of Salesh. The caravan is dogged by murder, magic, and the brooding image of the Master of the Mountain, a powerful demon, looking down from his mountain kingdom upon the greenlands and the travelers passing below. In Salesh, Smith becomes an innkeeper, but on the journey he befriended the young Lord Ermenwyr, a decadent demonic half-breed. Each time Ermenwyr turns up, he brings new trouble with him.

The outgrowth of stories Baker has been writing since childhood, as engaging as Tolkien and yet nothing like him, Smith's adventure is certainly the only fantasy on record with a white-uniformed nurse, gourmet cuisine, one hundred and forty-four glass butterflies, and a steamboat. This is a book filled with intrigue, romance, sudden violence, and moments of emotional impact, a cast of charming characters, and echoes of the fantasy tradition that runs from Lord Dunsany and Fritz Leiber to Jack Vance and Roger Zelazny.

Since I have a Kindle, a phone and a PC, I grab them while they are free. If it shows up in EPUB later, great. If not, I have plenty of options for reading (and sometimes you can get Amazon to switch to a new edition for free, if it later gets released in mobi instead).

The Topaz edition is free at Amazon, but the AZW edition is $9.99, as is the ePub edition over at B&N. I would be surprised if it shows up free at B&N.

This title has been deleted from Amazon catalog so I don't think it's likely to show up free elsewhere. The newer, presumably non-topaz, edition is still there for $9.99. I suspect deleting this old edition is probably what they intended to do in the first place and in the process it accidentally got marked as free.

Topaz is basically page images with Amazon DRM. If you want to read it on a Kindle, fine. However, if you don't have a Kindle, it's difficult to convert Topaz to another format, such as epub, which can be read on a variety of other ereader devices. It involves both dedrming the file and OCRing the page images. Non-Topaz Amazon files are much easier to convert and read on other devices.

What Moe said. I maintain my library in both Mobi and ePub formats, and I avoid Topaz books, as they don't allow my doing so without a great deal of work. I make only extremely rare exceptions for must-read titles.

I'd also add that some Topaz books are horribly formatted and a real PITA to read on the Kindle. As I only own a few, all purchased back in the Kindle 1 days, this may have improved -- I can't say.

All images? Ugg..that sounds like a horrid format... didn't know that any of the ebook formats are like that... only knew some archival ones that did that.

I believe it was specifically done that way for DRM purposes.
