Samsung has sold Liquavista to Amazon!

The Digital Reader reveals that Samsung has sold Liquavista. The buyer is unconfirmed, but looks likely to be Amazon is now confirmed as the buyer.

Could this mean that a Liquavista Kindle will appear sometime in the next year?

I'm really looking forward to seeing a production Liquavista display, and I'm hoping it won't be the disappointment that Mirasol turned out to be.

Either that or Luquavista has a valuable patent somewhere in its portfolio.

So, did Amazon just get the best display tech out there? - Or - Did Samsung unload a
nightmare that would never become profitable?

Neither.
It looks to be useful niche tech that is a poor fit for Samsung (an LCD powerhouse) but *might* give Amazon a road to unique, premium ebook readers or tablets.
For all we know, Amazon is just buying it for the staff and corporate expertise instead of the Liquavista display tech itself.

I'd love to see color e-ink become a practical reality, but I have to wonder why Samsung, who are in the business of manufacturing displays, couldn't make a go of it with this company.

Edit: If Liquivista was that close to market, then Samsung sold them right BEFORE the big payoff, which makes no sense.

Samsung is in the LCD display business and that is a high-volume business.
Liquavista's strengths, even in the best of all worlds, are not exactly necessary in most LCD products. And the products, like ereaders, that might benefit from the tech are really low volume compared to TVs, laptops, phones and other LCD products. Samsung is a big company selling products and components by the tens of millions. Liquavista might sell their displays by the tens of thousands.

At this point the more appropriate question is "Why did Samsung buy Liquavista in the first place?".

As I remember the description of the Liquavista Display, one feature that
was heavily touted was that it was produced using LCD production techniques.

"LCD 2.0" could be a little overboard though.

Luck;

Or it could be that they bought it so a competitor could not (for example, Microsoft, which could bring out an ereader device if Nook actually becomes part of them).

Uh, Amazon's pockets aren't deep enough to outbid Microsoft on anything they really want.

Plus the rumor dujour has an unnamed Microsoftie denying any interest in taking over Nook.
http://www.the-digital-reader.com/20...edia-purchase/

My, I was somewhat skeptical of the original rumor (mostly over the quoted price) and I'm skeptical about the debunking, but both reports are out there.

We all know that Amazon buys things to kill off potential competition... so the chance is 50:50 you'll see the display in an Amazon device, whether its better than what they have, or not. Stanza was a better reader (still is, even with its broken bits) and they did not make use of it to create better Kindle software, they killed it.

And this is what B&N did to Fictionwise, now they are a stones throw away from going belly up themselves.

Sooner or later corporations greed & destructive behavior comes back to bite them in the ass one way or another.
