I was only able to listen to about half the podcast. My kid insisted on yakking over it. But thought it would be of interest here. This link is to the page rather than a specific episode. But currently it's the one at the top: Florida County Bans 20+ Jodi Picoult Books. Here's What She Thinks About That

School libraries are a place for knowledge, not propaganda. The less 'topical' literature gets there, the better.

I guess it depends on what one considers topical. One of the banned books is The Diary of Anne Frank. One of the Jodi Picoult books that was banned was The Storyteller. Both are books about the holocaust. Are these 'topical'?

If you don't live in Florida, you really should move to this county that likes to ban books.

I do. But the holocaust being 'topical' is a sad thing. As another user in another thread recently said:

This is a battle between the extremists. In one corner, we have a group that thinks it's OK to have a book with pictures of two guys having oral sex - in an elementary school library. In the other corner, we have a group that wants to ban a book because it contains a reference to a homosexual character.

Both of these groups are whackos. They feed off of each other. Trying to top each other in the "we can be more extreme than you" category. We'd be better off if neither group existed, and normal people with functional brains were calling the shots again.

What book and school are you referring to? It sounds like complaints I have heard about GenderQueer, but I only remember it being in high school libraries.

I don't remember hearing of anyone saying it belongs in an elementary school library. But I haven't read every article out there I'm sure.
