Indexing when connected to PC?

H'lo,

I can't figure out a way to measure this; if I'm sideloading books onto my Kindle (via Calibre) does it index while it's plugged in and in 'USB mode' - or will it only do that once I've disconnected from the computer?

After checking overnight - it doesn't appear to do so, or does so at a much slower pace - so I've whipped it out, and put it on a plug-socket-wall charger.
