I agree. It's hard to resize text or have it easily readable when you put a pdf on an ereader. Not to mention that the size of things like text isn't easy to control when you are trying to read a pdf on eink either. Epubs or Kindle (depending on the format and reader) are easily adjusted for the individual reader's tech by comparison. The reflow when text size is changed for example is even. You can't say that with pdf files though. Plus epubs and kindle ebook are generally smaller (many under 1 mb) than a pdf file is. And really PDF (Portable Document Format) isn't made for easy reading. It's made to make it easier to do things like email a document from say New York to Los Angeles or London England within a companies business needs. It was never really designed to be a practical ereader format.

PDF wasn't designed as a reading format. It was designed to capture complex format print documents for archiving. It turned out by useful for transmitting documents via email. Reflow and resizing were retroactively grafted when ebooks first became a commercial product but it's a poor fit because pdf's primary focus (hardwired into the format) remains page design. After 30+ years the best way to read a pdf is still to print it.

^^^ yes but we're kind of stuck with it, and a glare free, eye friendly, responsive, large display would be great to have for pdf.

We already have the 13.3" Onyx Boox Max & Onyx Boox Max Carta, and although I'm not sure it's still being made Sony's 13.3" device as well can still be found.

Well, considering you didn't insist on "cheap" Sony already has the answer to your prayers.

Multiple displays. Multiple copies of the same document open to different pages. Search. Hyperlinks. Cut & Paste. ...

For me, the best way to "read" a PDF is electronically.

Exactly, and they have recently delivered Carta technology on plastic (Mobius) backed screens for the 13.3" market. I would expect it to roll out for all devices. Not only is it less breakable but it is also lighter.
