I'm a fan of the modern gift economy. Take what you need, give what you can. What I, and many others need is access to all knowledge. What we are prepared to give is everything.

The present system, copyrights included, allows you to give a few bucks in exchange for a book. So what are you agitating for?

There's a subtle distinction between "Take what you need" and "Receive what you need". I think gift implies willingness to donate, not ability to take...

I think I prefer to rely on a trade economy.

Copyright does not hinder the preservation or dissemination of knowledge.

Yes indeed. Or that s/he already takes stuff without paying for it, and wants to justify it.

Then why all the fuss about DRM and things? And why are some prosecuted for disabling DRM or hosting knowledge on websites. Why is THIS WEBSITE not allowed to host anything and everything that it wants??

This isn't about the next year's profits for some random company, this is about the future of the planet and those who will choose to inhabit it. This is about stopping the endless cycle of destruction that we have thrust upon ourselves by refusing to recognize ourselves as integral parts of the whole.

The systems of the past are done. Copyright is obsolete and a hindrance to the advancement of our culture. Moving into the next era is going to require a shift of responsibility from the leaders of the past onto every individual. In order to properly educate these individuals, freedom to seek out and explore all knowledge will be necessary.

Any blocks encountered in this search for knowledge and information must be demolished so that the path may be cleared for yourself, and others who follow.

Sounds like you equating writing with knowledge. How much knowledge did you get when you read LOTR?

It sounds like you're describing a full circle situation. New leaders would arise simply because they actually waded through the filler and on to good information. In the long run, the scenario would at best be temporary.

To ensure everyone could benefit from knowledge and information would be contradictory to your view, since leaders would have to be appointed to destroy most of the information that wasn't enriching.

I don't see how anyone could buy the Utopian view if they've observed their peers in the human race for long.

I feel like Captain Bringdown now.

I see two layers of information, the first, consisting of all knowledge. And the second layer, filtered by all. In a sense this is what the internet is. But currently, we view filtering as a job. We need to begin viewing the need for filtering as a game, with equality as the goal.

At what point does that become censorship?

As you know, left to our own devices, garbage will thrive. It would make more sense to kill most of the human race or employ eugenics than to rely on our species demanding quality.

I disagree, since I believe we have yet to be left to our own devices. Garbage will be produced, but there is no reason why it should make it to the second layer, if the filter is in place.

I know that most knowledge filters in place today do not take into account everyone. Instead we are shown limited subsets of knowledge filtered by small groups. Library's are one example, where the librarian has traditionally been the filter, One person filtering for all.

We must all become each others librarians, and I believe that we are.
