As requested, here is an outline of the purpose of this thread:

We point out free and bargain Non-Fiction to each other, and occasionally recommend certain books that are/were free (or the opposite!).

Because Kindle freebies are easiest to find, the majority of the books listed are from Amazon, but freebies and bargains from other retailers and in other formats are more than welcome!

In case no retailer is specifically mentioned in a post, it is safe to assume it's for Amazon US.

Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast. Enjoy!

Any idea if B&N is still doing these? This past week, none of the FT Press books that were free on Amazon went free on B&N (I kept checking it through the week). The only one in this bunch that I don't have is not free at B&N, either.

I appreciate reference work of this nature is not cheap to produce, but I'd love to know of any rather more financially accessible e-material archaelogy works out there.

I'm sure I'm not the only amateur archaeology fan who'd be interested.

when I got my very first kindle way back when, I had the same frustrations. I ended up searching on all the go to names like Boaz and so on and found quite a few actually. it takes time but is worth it

It seems to be hit or miss with them. Same on the Agate freebies (several new ones tonight, only at Amazon, though)

I tried to pre-order that one and it asked for a credit card. It even said "Gift Cards are not supported for this transaction." Why would it do that for a book for $0.00?

For whatever reason, Amazon requires a credit card for any pre-order even if it's free. I keep around a VISA gift card that has something like fifty cents left on it just for sites like this. I also use it at Google Play, where you need a credit card on file to get any free books. An extra bonus is that the gift cards will electronically verify with a bogus name (I keep a separate account for freebies at each book store to make sure I don't mistakenly buy something when getting free books).

Then we'll have posses of kids wandering around wrapped in sheets with awful wigs and slap, with usually mildly embarressed "carers", begging for any rubbish cheap sweets from anyone prepared to give 'em some - no health or safety questions asked .....

Don't encourage 'em to read about it and get creative, it's bad enough as it is .....

Oh, now store-wise, it's long been Christmas here (early last month). I think Halloween Candy was in stores two months ago....

I've even seen notices of church Halloween "doings" since the last day of last month (as if we would forget that it's on the 31st, I suppose ... although some cities try to make kids celebrate on some other random weekend day, by visiting malls and going store to store, in preparation for their later indoctrination in economic recovery shopping).

So, it isn't me encouraging them, to be sure.
