New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Science Fiction by Real Scientists presented by textbook publisher Springer, containing speculative fiction works with scientific explanation afterwords, written by leading scientists such as Giancarlo Genta (Wikipedia) and others. From the looks of it, these are more like the sort of sfnal narrative non-fiction-ish what if? pieces that occasionally show up in Nature (Wikipedia), than conventional science fiction stories. Short stories and novels are both represented, plus some non-fiction genre overviews at the top tier, such as Hollywood Science and Exploring Science through Science Fiction, and an SF Writer's guide to using medicine in science fiction. Fixed tiers of $1, $8, and $15, no new books added next week. Quote:
Bundle of Holding's current RPG gamebook offers are for: Indie Treasure Trove +4, containing independent RPGs from around the world, and Dragon Warriors, a fantasy RPG campaign in the popular nostalgic classic British Lands of Legend setting. Groupees has added a number of standalone full single issue titles to the $0 freebie tier of their Pure Dynamite comics bundle, if you're interested, including issues based on the popular Twilight Zone, Tarzan, and Army of Darkness franchises. They also seem to have bumped up the offerings in the higher tiers with some new stuff. Last edited by ATDrake; 09-14-2016 at 02:20 PM. |

StoryBundle has a new offering for:
Extreme Sci-Fi Bundle curated by J. Daniel Sawyer (ISFDB), which contains a mix of indie titles, and newer and backlist works by established authors. There's a 1994 Warner Aspect novel from Kevin J. Anderson (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a collection of sfnal sports-themed short stories by multiple Hugo & Nebula Award winner Mike Resnick (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a Retrieval Artist series novel by former Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction editor Kristine Kathryn Rusch (ISFDB, Wikipedia), and a bunch of other stuff. $5 minimum gets you 5 titles: 4 novels (including the Anderson backlist) + 1 story collection. $15 top tier gets you an additional 5 titles: 3 novels + 1 story collection + 1 anthology. Their Truly Epic Fantasy 2016 Bundle curated by Kevin J. Anderson, containing more backlist sfnal works, and their Political Thriller Bundle curated by Nick Harlow, containing 2 vintage backlist novels by the late Pulitzer Prize winner Allen Drury (Wikipedia), including the novel for which he won said Pulitzer Prize in 1960 (Wikipedia), are still available. |

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Forbidden Books supporting Banned Books Week containing mostly comics, but also a few prose books in there. Selections include portions of Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples' Hugo-nominated Saga from Image, a whole bunch of books from Fantagraphics, non-fiction about the founder of MAD Magazine and a Disney copyright dispute, and there's a nifty-looking graphic novel autobiographical tale by Samuel R. Delany (ISFDB, Wikipedia), though more focusing on his personal life than his classic science fiction work. Fixed tiers of $1, $8, and $15 (no new titles added next week). Even though a couple of titles in this are repeats from previous comics bundles, this is an auto-buy for me at the top-tier. ETA: the Disney lawsuit, MAD Magazine founder, and underground comics books from Fantagraphics are PDF-only, due to the mix of text and pictures. Everything else is available as both PDF and CBZ, and sometimes ePub. Quote:
Bundle of Holding has rotated their RPG gamebook offerings, and the new one is for Iron Kingdoms, a steampunk sorcery game set in a fantasy world undergoing the local equivalent of the Industrial Revolution. Last week's Indie Treasure Trove +4 is still available for a few more days. Just a reminder that StoryBundle' Truly Epic Fantasy Bundle 2016 expires in a few more days, if you haven't already decided whether or not you want it. Their Extreme Sci-Fi Bundle and Political Thriller Bundle are available for a while longer, the latter until the end of the US election season, it looks like. As a special treat for today, Wildside Press is running two freebies, one probably for a limited time:
Wildside Press Presents: Discover A New Author: Joseph Green contains a science fiction short story, originally published in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1982, by the eponymous author (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE), who also did educational work for NASA for many decades, explaining scientific concepts to laypersons. This series of free ebooks is designed to promote authors you may not have tried before. In this case, Joseph Green. Joseph Green pursued a dual career before retiring from NASA, 37 years in the American military and civilian space programs, while writing at nights and on weekends. His stories, many written -- as was this one -- with wife Patrice Milton, have appeared in the major science fiction magazines and numerous original anthologies. His five science fiction novels and an earlier collection of stories are available on Amazon and other e-book outlets. This story, "EasyEd" -- from his recent Wildside Press collection, Running Wild: Unfettered Stories of Imagination -- is typical of Joseph Green's work. If you enjoy this one you will like the others. And there's a repeat of The Melba Marlett Minipack, containing 2 short vintage mystery stories by the late author (biographical obituary at Alliance High School), if you happened to miss it earlier. Speaking of science made fiction, a reminder that the Humble Book Bundle Science Fiction By Real Scientists, chock-full of titles by academics and scholars who are also science fiction writers, presented by textbook publisher Springer, expires tomorrow on Wednesday at 11 AM Pacific Time. In addition to all the speculative fiction, there are also 5 non-fiction titles in the lot about the relation of science fiction to real science, in case you wanted some backgrounders on how the stuff depicted in fiction would work out (or not) in real life. One of them is available at the $1 minimum tier (and was shaping up to be a nifty read when I started skimming it), and if it turns out you like it, IIRC HB gives you up to 2 weeks after the end of the bundle to bump up your pledge to a higher tier and get all the books, if you wish. Wildside Press has a new freebie, and it's for:
Wildside Press Presents: Discover A New Author: Richard Deming containing 2 short mystery stories by the late pulp fiction writer (author profile @ Prologue Books, a rather nice pulp fan blog overview of one of his series). This series of free ebooks is designed to promote authors you may not have tried before. In this case, Richard Deming. Here are two complete short stories and samples of 3 novels. The stories are: "Friendly Witness" (originally published in The Saint Magazine, July 1984) "False Alarm" (originally published in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, Feb 1965). Enjoy! Last week's Humble Bundle, which doesn't look like it got posted, is for: Humble Book Bundle Fan Faves + Digital Debuts presented by Make:, full of the popular DIY tech magazine's titles for hobbyist crafters. A few of these are repeats from previous bundles, but all the titles marked as New are new not only to HB, but also to being digital versions, so they're completely brand-new, and even among the other stuff, there's some things I don't think I've seen before. Fixed tiers of $1, $8, and $15 (new books were added this week), and a diversity of subject matter from 3-D printing to robotics to edible makeables to recreating technological invention history in your own home. Quote:
Just a reminder that StoryBundle's Extreme Sci-Fi Bundle ends in just a few more hours, in case you think you might want to pick it up. |

StoryBundle has a new offering through the next 3 weeks, for:
Pulse Pounders Thrillers Bundle curated by Star Wars tie-in author Kevin J. Anderson, consisting mostly of newly-written titles from his WordFire Press imprint. This contains a mix of sfnal urban fantasy-ish/technothrillers and more conventional mundane mystery/suspense ones, with contributions by Star Trek tie-in writer Jeffrey J. Mariotte (ISFDB, Wikipedia), Dragonlance tie-in writer Jean Rabe (ISFDB, Wikipedia), Star Trek tie-in writer Dean Wesley Smith (ISFDB, Wikipedia), an anthology edited by Bram Stoker Award-winning author Jonathan Maberry (ISFDB, Wikipedia), and more. $5 minimum gets you 5 novels: 1 urban fantasy, 1 technothriller, 2 with sfnal elements, 1 straightforward ex-cop vs serial killer thriller. $15 top-tier gets you an additional 6 titles: 2 anthologies + 4 novels (2 cozy-ish contemporary mysteries, 1 supernatural artifact chase, 1 sci-fi action thriller). Also, their older Political Thriller Bundle is still available through the US election season. Last edited by ATDrake; 10-13-2016 at 05:05 AM. |

Last week's Bundle of Nerves +4 occult/horror assortment is also still available for a limited time. Last edited by ATDrake; 10-19-2016 at 03:50 PM. |

Humble Bundle's new offering is for: Humble Mobile Bundle RiffTrax for more of their popular Mystery Science Theater 3000-like commentary tracks from MST3K alumni, both audio and video. According to the info, these are DRM-free once redeemed via keys for the RiffTrax site and can be downloaded or played via the mobile app. There's a freebie short track available in exchange for your email address in the newsletter signup box. Tiers are $1, beat-the-average, and $10 top-tier. New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble RPG Book Bundle Fiction Faves containing tabletop gaming titles based on popular science fiction and fantasy series including George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, Charles Stross' The Laundry Files, Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn, Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files, and the Atomic Robo comic book. Fixed tiers of $1, $8, and $15, no new titles added next week. These are PDF format due to replicating the complex layouts of the printed books. I got the Laundry RPG gamebooks from a Bundle of Holding offer previously, and they're actually a pretty funny read in their own right for the comments about the worldbuilding of the series and suggestions for how to play with it. Mind you, that was more for the sourcebook supplement (apparently not included in this bundle) than the basic player guides or the case scenarios handbook which OTOH do provide a useful consultable reference to various stuff in the books, equivalent to a good fan wiki. Anyway, if you don't already have and were wanting to try, this is pretty good value for money since normally these things cost quite a lot and the price of the entire bundle wouldn't even cover the regular price of one of the supplements alone for most of the series. Quote:
StoryBundle also has a new offering, good for the next three weeks: Military Horror Bundle curated by small publisher Cohesion Press contains sfnal hybrid action adventures about soldiers fighting monsters, including contributions by authors such as multiple Stoker Award-winning author and editor Jonathan Maberry (ISFDB, Wikipedia). Many of these appear to be in a shared universe series of short story collections, if you happen to like that sort of thing (unless the name is just a marketing branding banner), with themes ranging from ancient mythology to futuristic monsters, and contributors such as multiple Hugo & Nebula Award-winning author Mike Resnick. $5 minimum gets you 2 novels + 2 anthologies + 1 single-author collection containing previously-published short stories and essays by Bram Stoker Award-winning author Weston Ochse (ISFDB, Wikipedia). $15 top tier adds another 2 novels + 3 anthologies. As a reminder, their Pulse Pounders Thrillers curated by Star Wars tie-in author Kevin J. Anderson ends in another day or so, and their Political Thriller Bundle, containing two backlist novels by a Pulitzer Prize winning novelist (including said novel which won him the Pulitzer Prize), ends in another week once the US election season is over. And of course, for more sfnal franchise RPG gamebooks, Bundle of Holding has a pseudopodful of seasonal Lovecraftian offerings, for Bundle of Tentacles +4 containing supplements to Chaosium's popular Call of Cthulhu series, and Trail of Cthulhu and Trail of Cthulhu +2 for Pelgrane Press' own Mythos variant. New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle LEGO presented by No Starch Press chock-full of titles about everyone's favourite Danish building blocks. There's a mix of DIY building and artbooks, including a nifty mini-history illustrated with recreated LEGO® scenes, which I've read from the library and recommend, especially since it's in the minimum tier. Fixed tiers of $1, $8, and $15 (no new titles added next week). Several titles in it are repeats from previous HB, but there's plenty of new stuff, including an illustrated guide to the history of architecture using LEGO®, which looks pretty nifty. Quote:
Speaking of RPGs based on popular sfnal book franchises, Bundle of Holding's new offers include: The One Ring containing as you might have guessed, the tie-in gamebooks for J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, out from Cubicle 7 Entertainment and Sophisticated Games. There's also the Old School Revival +4 containing a mix of assorted vintage RPGs, and the Lovecraftian Bundle of Tentacles +4 is still on offer for a limited time. Book View Café has rotated their monthly specials, and there's a bunch of stuff at the 99 cent level across various genres. Probably of most interest for NaNoWriMo will be the two 99 cent writing advice books:

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle UNIX presented by O'Reilly featuring all sorts of DIY reference/learning to get you better acquainted with the popular computer OS' built-in tools and spin-offs such as Linux (current 2016 3rd edition) and Mac OS X (sadly outdated, alas: this 2nd edition boasts that it has been updated to cover 10.2 Jaguar; we're now up to 10.12 Sierra). ETA: apparently the Mac OS X book now covers up to 10.11 in the actual 2016-updated edition that you get in the HB; it's just that the used cover image, product blurb, and the linked O'Reilly catalogue page are all for the original 2nd edition from the mid-2000s. Fixed tiers of $1, $8, and $15 (no new titles added next week). This is very good value for money, and an auto-buy for me. Quote:
StoryBundle has two new offerings: Leading Ladies Fantasy, containing indie titles with leading women characters. $5 minimum for 5 titles, $15 top-tier for an additional 5 titles. There's also a freebie in it for newsletter subscribers. Pico Game Bundle containing fiction and non-fiction video gaming-related titles, including a quasi-academic history of Dungeons & Dragons, as well as several makings-of popular game titles, a few DIY your own, and a novel with an audiobook version. $5 minimum gets you 4 titles, $15 top-tier adds an additional 5 e-books, plus the audiobook, and the Windows/Mac/Linux-compatible game-creating/playing software that goes with the magazines in the minimum tier (the software is regularly priced at $14.99 anyway), which appears to have a decent-sized open source community which has already created a number of games for it. Ending in the next few days are their sfnal Military Horror and 2016 NaNoWriMo Writing Tools bundles. Speaking of fantasy RPG, Bundle of Holding is offering: Buffy & Angel containing the officially licensed game for the popular TV show, and there are still a few hours left to get The One Ring, containing the officially licensed games for J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth setting. Their new offering is for Indie Cornucopia +4 containing titles across various genres by independent RPG authors. New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Science + Discovery presented by Make:, containing more of the popular DIY tech magazine's offerings, with a special focus on space-related and science exploration projects this time around. Several of the books are repeats from previous HB, but there are plenty of new titles and magazine issues, including instructions for how to DIY your own satellite, and some more basic getting started making stuff volumes. Fixed tiers of $1, $8 (extra titles added next week), and $15. Quote:
StoryBundle has a new offering: Immerse or Die 3 Bundle full of sfnal indie titles curated by a guy who's apparently devoted his website to weeding out the chaff. $3 minimum for 4 titles; $12 top tier for another 4 titles. Still available for a limited time: their Leading Ladies Fantasy, Pico Game and 2016 NaNoWriMo Writing Tools bundles. Bundle of Holding's new RPG gamebook offerings are for: Worldbuilder's Toolkit +2 & Worldbuilder's Toolkit +4, containing guides and tools to help you become a better dungeon master. The Indie Cornucopia +4 bundle full of games from small independent developers is also still available. |
