I forgot the name, but there was an author who wrote like 3-4 gothic horror novels back in the 70s/80s then died. Every book of "hers" afterward was ghostwritten.

I thought of her, but she had (I thought) a whole lot more gothic horror novels than 3-4. Perhaps the key word is 'gothic', as opposed to merely 'horror'?

By the way, Andrew Neiderman is the ghostwriter. He also writes horror under his own name.

Would that be VC Andrews? VC Andrews writes more books dead then alive.

V. C. Andrews. The 'new' author is Andrew Niederman. He's written more V. C. Andrews than Virginia Andrews did.

She wrote, I think, seven? At any rate, a small percentage of V.C. Andrews books. (In the UK, she's published as Virginia Andrews, in the U.S. V.C. Not sure what that says.)

When horror is popular, she's a horror writer, when they aren't popular, her work is 'gothic'

Yes, books can be pretty lethal. I recall taking a fun quiz some 20 years ago, How will you die? The answer I got was "Crushed to death under a bookshelf". Sounded quite true back then. It's harder to get crushed to death under a heap of ereaders, I guess.
