Free and bargain Non-Fiction in August 2013

As requested, here is an outline of the purpose of this thread:

We point out free and bargain Non-Fiction to each other, and occasionally recommend certain books that are/were free (or the opposite!).

Because Kindle freebies are easiest to find, the majority of the books listed are from Amazon, but freebies and bargains from other retailers and in other formats are more than welcome!

In case no retailer is specifically mentioned in a post, it is safe to assume it's for Amazon US.

Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast. Enjoy!

Chicago Univ Press:

Playing in Time: Essays, Profiles, and Other True Stories
Carlo Rotella
288 pages

Quote:
“The strength of his new essay collection comes from the odd places he finds these headliners: on the suburban D.C.-area blues circuit, in Chicago’s polka clubs and at fantasy jazz camps in the Northeast. But like other greats of the nonfiction craft—Joan Didion, John Jeremiah Sullivan—Rotella’s own personality eventually comes through.”—Time Out Chicago

HarperCollins has Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography by John Dominic Crossan on sale for $3.99 at B&N, Amazon, and the rest of the usual suspects.

This is essentially a popularized version of Crossan's scholarly book, The Historical Jesus.

Thanks for that. Crossan is always an interesting, if controversial, author. One of those thoughtful writers who falls in the category of people you may not always agree with but can't ignore. I'll download it to my ever more bloated TBR list pronto.

I felt the same way. I stared at it for five minutes trying to talk myself out of buying it before hitting the "buy" button.

I was just searching for a travel guide for an upcoming trip, and noticed that a bunch of Lonely Planet guides are free at Amazon. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but I did a quick search and it appears no one has mentioned this in the last few months, at least. Of course, the one I was interested in is NOT free, and the selection is fairly random, ranging from Discover the Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel to The Phillipines, and also with a bunch of "specialty" ones about Britain (Culture Vulture Britain, Mini Britain, Tasty Britain, etc.) but who knows, you might get lucky.

I don't know how to do advanced searches on Amazon very well, so this is just a search for Lonely Planet as publisher, sorted by price, and the first ones are the freebies. There are 15 free right now.

Kudos! Lots of brownie points for thinking of your other half. The question is - does she have her own eReader or will you have to lend her yours?

In case there are any neo-pagans here (or anyone else that finds this stuff fascinating), Wicca Magickal Beginnings by Sorita D'este and David Rankine is free at Amazon.

Quote:
The origins of the Wiccan Tradition have long been a subject of debate amongst practitioners and scholars alike. Did Gerald Gardner invent the tradition? Is Wicca a survival of a British folk magick system? Could it be a continuation of a European tradition of Pagan Witchcraft? Might it be that it evolved from Victorian ceremonial magick, or perhaps it is the modern manifestation of the medieval Grimoire Tradition?

In this book the authors explore the possible beginnings of the tradition by examining the practices in the context of magickal and spiritual thought spanning thousands of years.Through setting aside the endless debates about initiatory lineages, they look beyond the personalities of the people and instead focus on what they consider to be at the heart of the tradition – the practices. Evidence from many previously uncredited and unconsidered sources is examined. This clearly shows how all the significant component parts of Wiccan ritual and practice have roots reaching back, in some instances thousands of years, before its public emergence at the hands of Gerald Gardner in 1950’s England. They explore the sometimes surprising antecedents for key practices such as initiation, magick circles, ritual tools, the invocation of the Guardians of the Watchtowers, Drawing Down the Moon and The Great Rite. The precedents for the Book of Shadows, Wiccan Rede and Charge of the Goddess are also considered as part of this groundbreaking work.

Wicca Magickal Beginnings may well answer as many questions as it creates about the true origins and nature of what is probably the most influential of the Western Esoteric Traditions today. Through combining scholarly research with practical knowledge, the authors clearly illustrate that the future of the tradition lies in utilising the rich diversity of its past, through the appreciation of its magickal origins and the untapped potential inherent in it.

This book will be invaluable to anyone with an interest in the history, practices and beliefs of the Wiccan Tradition – and its links to Paganism, Witchcraft, the British Folk Traditions and Ceremonial Magick.
