Good Luck. I posted in the "books that changed your life" that Stranger was one on my list. of course it's a different age these days than it was then...

Please do let me/us know what you think, particularly since you'll be reading it for the first time.

I quite like the first half of Stranger in a Strange land, even now ... it's the second half where it starts to fall apart for me. I find that with a lot of Heinlein's longer works. As Kenny notes, it was a different time then, I seem to remember enjoying the whole book when I first read it.

Stranger in a Strange Land is one of those books you either love or hate - Me, I think I liked it .

Currently reading one of 5 recent downloads from Patricia's Library .... by Howard Browne; having given up on Dickens' Edwin Drood.

I have To Kill a Mockingbird lined up for later

To Say Nothing of the Dog was a fun read. After finishing it, I considered reading something by Larry Brown, but after getting lost in Goodreads , I ended up with Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin. A mystery set in the rural American South.

I haven't seen the movie yet since I wanted to read the book first, but I'll probably see it soon. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the book.

The plot is that a "rogue planet" is discovered by astronomers, which is going to collide with the Earth in a few months time. Civilisation starts to collapse as the news causes mass panic, and a group of scientists tries to build a spaceship which will take a few people to the new planet to start afresh.

About half way through it so far. Very enjoyable, and also nicely formatted with few errors.
There's also a sequel, after worlds collide. Our school library had both in one volume.

Flippin' between Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey, Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton, Death Without Company by Craig Johnson, and John Irving's Last Night in Twisted River. I'm just playing the field until one of them "sets the hook" and reels me into an exclusive relationship.

There's barely anything in it that's really SF, though. I think it's beginning to bug me how backwards-looking this type of stuff really is. I'd better not read the second one until I'm back in the right mood for an undemanding adventure.

I'm planning to move on to Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A Heinlein, a book I've been semi-dreading for a while. It's one of the 9 Hugo winners I have left to read - probably the one I'm least looking forward to - and will get me started on the last of my major sub-challenges this year. I seem to have the original version, not the newer extended edition. I'm hoping to have my expectations pleasantly confounded.
There are actually 7 books in the Familias Regnant Universe. The first 3 concern Heris Serrano. The next 2 concern Esmay Suiza and the last 2 are Suiza and Serrano.

I also am one who enjoyed Stranger in a Strange Land.

I have been thinking about reading Great North Road. If you finish it let me know how you liked it. If you don't finish it I guess that will tell me something too.

Oh I'll finish it eventually. But I usually have to warm up to one of Hamilton's behemoths by starting it a few times and reading a little farther each time. Like a climber making several short trips from base camp up the mountain and back again to acclimate to the altitude. Eventually, I'll get geared up and make my "summit run."

The fact that it's a stand-alone has made it a lot sexier than most new Hamilton releases would usually be.

Yes. And thank you! I've not read it, but have tried to read several of his stories and novels and have yet to get beyond a few pages.

I'm currently reading Barrayar by Bujold and it's knocking my socks off. Not a very action packed novel but it's just so well written that it's absolutely addictive.
