The Honourable Schoolboy (Book 2 of Karla Trilogy)
by John le Carre

is $3.92 at Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Honourable-Sch...able+schoolboy

Below is the blurb:
Featuring George Smiley, The Honourable Schoolboy is the second installment in the renowned Karla Trilogy, the follow-up to the New York Times bestselling Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which was the inspiration for the Oscar-nominated film starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy.

As the fall of Saigon looms, master spy George Smiley must outmaneuver his Soviet counterpart on a battlefield that neither can afford to lose.

The mole has been eliminated, but the damage wrought has brought the British Secret Service to its knees. Given the charge of the gravely compromised Circus, George Smiley embarks on a campaign to uncover what Moscow Centre most wants to hide. When the trail goes cold at a Hong Kong gold seam, Smiley dispatches Gerald Westerby to shake the money tree. A part-time operative with cover as a philandering journalist, Westerby insinuates himself into a war-torn world where allegiances—and lives—are bought and sold.

Redemption Trail by Preston Wood

Western in the California Gold fields

Word of Californian gold hit Solomon Weatherbee like revelation and redemption rolled into one.
Handing in his notice at Mr Hennepin's store, he takes $7.50 from the cash box, his weathered mare, and his father's old Harper's Ferry rifle.
It was time to make his fortune.

The author was a director in early television, an ad man on Madison Avenue, and a freelance television writer for over 20 years. He wrote over 150 teleplays.

Golden Eagles by Robert Mitchell, another one of his globe-trotting treasure hunt adventure thrillers, this one originally out from Australian publisher Boolarong Press in 1992.

Are the iron chests, chests filled with Golden Eagles – gold coins issued by the United States of America in the 1930’s and coveted the world over for their rarity – still on board the USS President Coolidge as she lies in her watery grave off the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu? Or were they removed soon after she sank in October 1942?

Three people set sail from Townville, Australia, to seek those eagles out, to dive, to cut and force their way deep into the bowels of that once mighty passenger liner, but are they alone?

Their yacht, the Belle, is tracked to the island by others determined to hijack the coins, regardless of the cost.

The Coolidge lay quiet beneath the waves, and at peace.

But that peace would never again be the same.

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: (linkage for the lot)

Thunder Island by Larry Johns, an action adventure thriller (possibly crime-based according to the categories; it's hard to tell from the blurb which mainly consists of a cryptic excerpt from the book) originally out from UK publisher Robert Hale in 1980.

Greed, intrigue and triple-cross; the component parts of disaster. Gilby Nash, demolition expert extraordinary, reaches for a glittering prize on a sun-soaked island where the bullet and the knife are never far away.

Johns also offers a self-pub-looking mercenary adventure thriller, if you're interested.

Dirty Money by Larry Johns, a self-pub sequel to his 2011 Robert Hale-published mercenary action adventure thriller A Warrior's Code, which we've previously received free last year, so if you liked that one, you might want to try this as well.

With nightmares of past deeds threatening his sanity, Martin Palmer - hero of "A Warrior's Code" - wants out of the mercenary soldier business. The problem: he was good at it. Very good. The question: will the business let him go? His solution: try any damned thing that does not require pointing guns at people.

Keeping his profile obscured he ends up in Nigeria where, more or less on a whim, he opens a motor-repair business. Chance brings him together with a full-blooded Kenyan tribesman, Kowato Segani. The pair hit it off from the start, like long lost brothers, and Palmer hires him to help in the repair business. Neither of them know too much about motor repair and, understandably, the business as such does not exactly prosper. Of the two of them, only Segani really wants to make a go of it. But, for Palmer at least, it's a lot of fun, and he's sleeping nights.

Then, out of the blue, up pops a man who bears all the hallmarks of a mercenary recruiter. The offer is in mercenary numbers and the job is related to the mercenary business.

Apparently, something Palmer stole many years before, had already been stolen...and they want it back!

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

The Stone Dog by Robert Mitchell, another one of his treasure hunt action thrillers, this one an historical-ish adventure set in the 1970s, originally out from Australian publisher Boolarong Press in 1995.

20th September 1917 – Wakaya, Fiji.

The Count Felix von Luckner, Master of the German raider Seeadler, lowers a sealed iron chest into the waters of a small unnamed bay under cover of darkness.

17th December 1971 – Cairns, Australia.

The chance mention of von Luckner’s name revives memories of boyhood tales of the secrets of that far-off night, and of the iron chest watched over by the stone dog.

But were the tales, told by Uncle Max, bosun on the Seeadler those fifty-four years ago, true, or were they merely that, yarns, nothing more?

And if true – would the chest still be there?

And if true – will it be worth the bloodshed?

Four books by Lia Matera, several of whose books were finalists for various awards back in the 1980's-1990's, are $0.99 right now. These are all Simon & Schuster titles, so $0.99 is a pretty good price.

Havana Twist is, according to SKYM and the cover photo, the seventh and last in the Matera's Willa Jansson series, although the Kobo and Amazon websites say it's an Earl Swagger mystery.
US Kobo: http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/havana-twist
US Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/Havana-Twist-E...dp/B00AK78V90/
Spoiler:
Quote:
Edgar-nominated author Lia Matera’s seventh Willa Jansson mystery is packed with “a riveting plot, realistic Havana settings, reawakened romance, and flavorful characters…a winner.” (Library Journal)

Attorney Willa Jansson’s mother has never balked at breaking the law, especially not for a good cause. So when Willa learns her mother has flouted federal regulations and gone off to Cuba, she figures it's just a harmless pilgrimage to lefty Graceland. But when her mother doesn’t return with the rest of her peacenik tour group, Willa fears her mother’s bleeding heart may finally have gotten her into more trouble than she can get herself out of.

But when Willa risks her career and passport by rushing to Cuba to retrace her mother’s steps, she finds that nothing there is quite as it seems. Following clues to neighborhoods tourists never see, through secret tunnels beneath the street, and into the finest luxury hotels, Willa is manipulated, misled, and nearly arrested. And in the meantime, newfound reporter friends—or are they CIA agents?—disappear as suddenly and inexplicably as her mother did. In a deadly game of cat and mouse, Willa follows her mother’s trail from Havana to Mexico City, from California back to Havana…all the while keeping barely one step ahead of two angry governments and at least one ruthless killer.

Designer Crimes is the fifth and last in the Matera's Laura Di Palma series.

Kindle US: http://www.amazon.com/Designer-Crime...dp/B00AYIDUTG/

They say that living well is the best revenge. But attorney Laura Di Palma may not have the opportunity to find out.

Her former boss, Steven Sayres, keeps trying to torpedo her new solo law practice and when his slanders cost Laura her most important client, she's pushed over the brink. This lawyer decides to sue. But before her case has even begun, labor lawyer Jocelyn Kinsley is shot before her eyes. Uttering the dying words "Designer crimes," Kinsley offers Di Palma the only clue to her slaying—and with it Laura's own best hope for survival. With the help of private detective Sandy Arkelett, Laura's friend and former lover, she does some computer hacking and finds an intriguing message hidden in Kinsley's cryptic words: Is someone designing custom crimes specifically to target bosses on behalf of the employees they wronged? Meanwhile, Laura is also defending a high school friend accused of murder, but trouble follows close on her heels and before long she is attacked and arrested. Living well just might be the best revenge, but survival becomes Laura's first order of business. Unfortunately, her detours off the high road could cost her more than just her career.

Last Chants is the fifth in the Willa Jansson series.

Quote:
San Francisco lawyer Willa Jansson is back in this “accomplished, compelling” (Publishers Weekly) fifth entry in the series by Edgar-nominated author Lia Matera.

When Willa Jansson inexplicably spots an old family friend, eccentric mythologist Professor Arthur Kenna, seemingly holding a stranger at gunpoint in downtown San Francisco, she has no choice but to take action, snaring the elderly professor and spiriting him away to a cabin in the mountains to hide him from the police until she can get to the bottom of the situation. Arthur, it seems, stands accused of the murder of his assistant, a shaman who was participating in an unusual computer experiment just before he was gruesomely disemboweled at the legendary magnetic “power spot” at Bowl Rock. As Willa and her PI friend Edward Hershey desperately search the crime scene for clues that will clear the professor’s name, they encounter a series of characters as wild and strange—and potentially deadly—as the woods itself.

Star Witness is the sixth in the Willa Jansson series.
US Kobo: http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/star-witness-1
US Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Witness-W.../dp/B00AYIDUT6
Spoiler:
Quote:
The sixth Willa Jansson mystery by Edgar-nominated author Lia Matera is “another winner in an outstanding series.” (Booklist).

Just when attorney Willa Jansson is about to take a little time off from her job at a San Francisco multimedia firm, a friend calls in a favor. Suddenly Willa’s off to Santa Cruz to solve what she hopes will be a simple case of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. But Willa is about to discover that nothing about this case—or the town where it occurred—is quite as it seems.

Alan Miller’s sports car went over an embankment and onto the coastal highway below, landing atop another car and killing its driver. But there are no tire tracks, no witnesses, and Miller’s injuries aren’t consistent with a car crash. Unable to recall where he was just after the accident, Miller's memory is jogged under hypnosis—a recollection so far-fetched that Willa knows it will never stand up in court. All of a sudden, seemingly idyllic Santa Cruz is rife with dangerous secrets, and Willa must outrun helicopters, snipers, reporters, and her own interfering mother, all while trying to maintain her credibility and her career by making the jury buy her client’s out-of-this-world alibi—provided she can keep the witnesses alive long enough to testify.

There are four mysteries on sale as part of an Open Road Media "Superbowl" sale. I just noticed this sale, and since the Superbowl is tomorrow, this sale may be fairly short-lived.

The mysteries are:

Collin Wilcox: The Lonely Hunter - $1.99

Stuart M. Kaminsky: The Big Silence - $0.99

Richard Curtis: The Suicide Squad - $1.99

Charles Williams: A Touch of Death - $0.99

The link to the Open Road page describing all of the books in the sale is:

http://www.openroadmedia.com/superbowl?

Once you are there you can click on each cover image to pull up a description of the book, and then click on the "buy the ebook" button for links to various retailers. Or, if you already know the retailer you want to use, you can just go search for the book there.

Open Road books are traditionally couponable at Kobo...

Bargain @ $1.99 each from Soho Crime (couponable @ Kobo, price should be the same in the other usual Canada & US stores, may or may not also be discounted in other regions):

Some really nice (mostly) 1st-in-series introductory price-drops I spotted while doing last-minute end-of-month shopping (Soho rotates their offerings on an irregular schedule, so I'd expect these to last for the next couple of days, or weeks, even). Three of them were directly on my wishlist, and accordingly I snapped them up, and one of them has themes Relevant To My Interests™, so of course I bought that as well while it was still cheap.
  • Sacred Games by Australian author Gary Corby (SYKM, Wikipedia), actually the 3rd in his Athenian Mystery series set in Ancient Greece, starring a fictional brother of the philosopher Socrates. I read the 2nd of these in paper from the library years ago and really liked it, and always meant to look the others up. I did say at the time that I'd happily scoop any of the series that went to $3 or below on sale and lo and behold, now one of them is!
  • Detective Inspector Huss by Swedish author Helene Tursten (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in her highly popular Göteborg-set police procedural series starring the eponymous Irene Huss, which has been made into a set of films as well (now up to 12, although the newer ones don't have English subtitles on the Blu-Ray releases, sigh), and I've been wanting to try the books my DVDs were based upon. We actually also got this in a freebie Danish translation as part of that Apple iOS Great Free Books promo last year.
  • Frozen Assets by British author Quentin Bates (SYKM), 1st in his Sergeant Gunnhildur Gísladóttir series set in small-town Iceland, which IIRC mitford13 recommended in last year's megathread, and is the 3rd of my Soho wishlist purchases today.
  • White Sky, Black Ice by Alaskan author Stan Jones (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in his Alaska-set Nathan Active series starring a State Trooper of Inupiak descent. This novel was a 2000 Barry Award Finalist for Best First Novel according to SYKM, and I actually bought it earlier in the month when it popped up on discount before the current Kobo coupon contest started, since my interest in nordic things also extends to the Arctic Circle and the Inuit & Inupiat and other aboriginal peoples thereof.
  • The Big Both Ways by Alaskan author John Straley (SYKM, Wikipedia), a standalone 1930s-set mystery adventure involving a logging camp mishap and some sort of life-changing roadtrip to Alaska with some pursuit by a Seattle detective. This didn't look too interesting to me from the e-book blurb (I'm cribbing the much more interesting description from the paperback), but SYKM says that the author's other Alaska-set series netted him two Shamus Award nominations, so I'll skim the sample and pick it up if it looks promising.

Sacred Games has already gone up to $12.79 at Kobo, but it's still 1.99 (so far) at Amazon (US).

Huh. That's weird. Normally stuff gets discounted in the US Kobo store and not the Canadian one, with us very occasionally getting some price-matching via Amazon.ca.

For the travelers in the audience, Sacred Games is still $1.99 at Kobo Canada when I check it with my auxiliary former-Sony Canadian account which doesn't already own it, and straight through to checkout the price stays the same (until test discount couponage is applied).
