Updating Libraries copying only new books
Good day all, I have a Tablet running win 8 with an USB and a Micro SD 32 giga drive. My main library is more than 35 gigas so I am not able to copy it on a single SD card, therefore I created several libraries whose names match that of my virtual libraries on the main one; then, using a 64 USB pen. I have been able to copy from main to SD (select virtual library, select all, right click copy all to matching SD library)
Now I should update but I would like to avoid copying all the books again in order to be quiker. To be clearer: Select a virtual library, select all books, right click copy to the SD, but actually copying only the new books. Any setting in the program, or ideas to organize libraries differently, that coul help me? Thanks Fiacca |

I use the excellent android app FolderSync. It can very efficiently synchronize two folders. I am sure that there are many similar folder sync apps for Windows 8.
I save the ebooks I want to have on my tablet to a folder on my NAS that I have shared over wifi. I connect to the folder as a device, from calibre, and update, add and remove books from the calibre gui. You can see what books are already in the folder and what books are not. On my tablet I have FolderSync set up to every hour automatically sync a folder on the tablet to that shared folder, but only if charging. Or when manually requested. Works great and is very fast. There are many other similar apps. I assume also for Windows 8. You can set up many folder pairs the same way in FolderSync. Or you can set up some cloud service to sync a folder on your computer to a folder on your tablet. See my signature for a suggestion. ![]() Last edited by Adoby; 08-28-2013 at 09:57 AM. |

Thanks, but I was probably not clear;
I have 1 library folder in my desktop, and several in the SD card. TO have your suggestion work I should split the main one too. I wold prefer to avoid it, but, if necessary, I will do it. Thanks Fiacca |

Maybe add a custom column to calibre "Copied to SD Card", and as the final step after copying material to the SD card to a bulk metadata edit (since the books are already selected) and set it to "Yes", then it's simple to see what has not been copied (ie new material) and copy it (and of course set the column too).

You can connect to the folder on a SD-card as if it is a device. That way you can use calibre to update the books on the cards. The GUI will show you what books are already there. Just sort on c
"on device" and add all books not already there. |

I think the OP needs to use a combination of: Filters (saved searches) specific to a remote Library Find Duplicates (between the Libraries) Copy to Library for newer non duplicates What is not easily covered is new formats (eg. adding a format to an empty book) |

I believe that the OP intended to use a VL for each SD-card? And possibly overlapping VLs? Then it should be feasible to connect to a SD-card, select the VL for that card, open the card as a device in calibre and send books that are missing to the card, or delete books on the card that no longer are included in the VL. But I am guessing...
I assume that the tablet is only intended as a reading device? If that is wrong then disregard everything I say here... It would most likely be easier to do slightly reduce the size of the library to copy, so it will fit on a single 32 GB SD-card. I have around 4 000 books on my Xoom, and it takes less than 10 GB. Plenty for me, and room to grow. Last edited by Adoby; 08-28-2013 at 11:53 AM. |
