Did you know....?

Harry,

Many thanks for all the Burroughs works you've provided. These are an old favourite and it's great to be able to carry them around with me.

Did you know that most of the Tarzan books available through PG are heavily edited, in order to make them more "PC"? This practice goes back at least as far as the Ballantyne paperback editions. Uncensored versions of at least the first eight books are available. Just thought you'd like to know. If anybody is interested, I can hunt down a link I have to an article on the subject.

Cheers,

Steve

This is a link to a "comparison text" of Tarzan of the Apes. It merges the original text with the censored/bowdlerized Ballantine version (shown in red).

http://www.erblist.com/erbmania/novels/toafuchs.html

Many of the changes seem to be the same sort of simplifications that were done to Philosophers Stone. Using simpler words and phrases instead of the originals but there is genuine censorship.

I've only scanned a few pages but standouts so far are "They messed in his cabin" which becomes "They took their meals in his cabin" and ""Ah doan know nuffin' 'bout dat, Marse Clayton, rejoined Esmeralda;" completely vanishes.

It will be interesting reading.

I assume that when that comparison was made, the 1914 version mentioned was not available on Google Books. It is now.

http://books.google.com/books?id=ZbB...page&q&f=false

I just took a preliminary look at the epub version and it seems better than many I had gotten from Google Books. It isn't perfect, but it would be a usable starting point for someone like HarryT to create a better epub.

Personally, I'm against changing an author's work to fit the "sensibilities" of the day. George Orwell wrote about where that ultimately leads. An author, a musician, an artist, etc. are all products of their times. You can't judge them by later standards, and they certainly shouldn't be revised to fit those standards.

An advanced search of Google Books for Tarzan PD books brings up a nice list of eight.

Harry,

Apologies for the delay. This is the link I was referring to:

http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/erbville/erbpdf.htm

Which contains a further link to a very thorough PDF document:

http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/erbville/censored.pdf

Both these have gone a long time without being updated, mainly because the creator has apparently shifted his focus to his ERBVille Press venture:

http://www.erbvillepress.com/

Used in conjunction with the links mentioned above, you now have all I know on the subject.

Interesting... on FeedBooks, Tarzan and the Golden Lion is the original (even pre-G&D edits) but all the others seem to be the censored versions. I haven't checked them all yet. And I confess I haven't checked your versions, Harry.

(Is it OK to discuss such things in the actual book upload thread?)
