Donna Andrews has done an annual Christmas/year-end holiday book since 2107, and even has a few more scattered through the years before that. Meg and Michael’s annual holiday celebration is well underway, with a throng of out-of-town relatives staying at their house. Hosting these festivities is a little harder than usual—they have to relocate all the events normally held in their library, currently occupied by Roderick Castlemayne, the irascible wildlife artist who’s creating twelve paintings of birds to illustrate Meg’s grandfather’s latest nature book.

Still, the celebrations continue—and the entire family rejoices to learn that Meg’s brother Rob and his longtime fiancée Delaney have finally decided to tie the knot. Unfortunately, they decide to do this in the middle of Meg and Michael’s annual New Year’s bash, dashing their mothers’ hopes of planning the wedding to end all weddings.

As I've mentioned a time or two or two dozen, I am a big fan of historical mysteries, and one of my favorite time periods is ancient Egypt. And one of my favorite series is Lauren Haney's 8-book Lieutenant Bak series, set in the time of the Pharaoh Hatshepsut, and published in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Sadly, only six of the eight books have been made available in e-book in the US, and only one seems to be available in the UK, and they haven't gone on sale very often in the recent past. (Although a few of them seem to hang out around $4-ish, which is way too high for decades old backlist, IMO, but probably won't break the bank either...)

Happily, though, the fourth book, A Curse of Silence, is on sale right now for $0.99/£1.99 in the US/UK.

This cozy series features one of the best-titled books I can think of, I Dreamed I Married Perry Mason. That's definitely on my "great title" list, which I keep just for titles, regardless of the book itself. But Dreamed isn't just a great title - it was also a finalist for the 2004 Agatha Award for Best First Novel back when first published. And the last book in the series, Dial H for Hitchcock, was a finalist for the 2010 Mary Higgins Clark Award.

A Refiner's Fire is the thirty-third and most recent (2024) book in Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti series. It's £1.99 at Kindle UK right now, although sadly not at Kobo UK, at least as of now. I had a review copy of this, and although I thought it was kind of a middle-ish book in this series, the whole series is so good that a middle-ish book in this series is a pretty darn good book compared to the whole of mysteries at large.
