Had a bit of a surprise today. Saturday I ordered my first refill of Ozempic; this is for the 3ml syringe at a dosage of 0.5 ml per week. I'd jsut finished off the first syribge which was a 2ml; 0.25 ml per week for the first 4 weeks followed by 2 weeks at 0.5ml.

The prescription was for 3 syringes, so I assumed it would be 1 syringe every 6 weeks. Now being a senior in Ontario and using Ozempic for T2 diabetes, it's covered mostly by the province to the tune of $4.11. Imagine my shock when the first text message came from the pharmacy that I owed $783.03! I thought I'd strighten matters out when i got to the pharmacy to pick up the prescription.

Then another text arrived saying I owed $4.11.

So today I dropped by to pick up the prescription. To my surprise it was
a) all 3 syringes
b) only $4.11
so obviously I now have 18 weeks worth of injections sitting in the fridge and my out of pocket cost is just $4.11. Frankly I wouldn't have minded if they'd only given me one syringe for 6 weeks, and then I'd have to pay $4.11 for the next prescription.

Is $4.11 what everyone pays or it is that low because your a 'senior in Ontario".

I'm a bit overweight, but because I don't have T2D or any other condition for which semaglutide is scheduled my GP can't prescribe. I can get it if I pay ~$US130 for 4 weeks supply… but I don't take any medication unless its prescribed.

I read recently that Canada's health insurance system is state based, is that true? I've always had the impression it was a national system.

Sort of. Provinces manage their health care but receive funding transfers from federal government.

The $4.11 is the cost to seniors through one of the Ontario Health Plan plans. Certain medications are covered at that rate

I just have the normal age-related stuff, "floaters" and tinnitus. When I first complained they said I'd get used to it. Mostly I have, but it's sub-optimal.
