Rereading a good book... or a bad one.

I'm re-reading "Timeline" by Michael Crichton. When I first read it I thought it was perhaps one of Crichton's worst pieces. Then for some reason last week we watched the movie that was made of it, and thought "Gee, that was pretty bad too!" But I picked up the book and started reading it again, but this time for some reason enjoying it! I can't understand why. I know what's going to happen, so there is no suspense. The characters aren't particularly deep so that can't be it. But something keeps me reading it. Go figure...

Timeline was the final straw that made me stop reading Crichton.

My problem with him is his constantly breaking up the flow of the story.

actually I had started it once, put it down, came back to it sometime later and enjoyed it. I don't know what made it work the second time

Timeline was the first real novel I read in English. I didn't really understand it

About rereading, I alwasy do it. I don't even remember how many times I've read Ada or Ardor. And it somehow gets better everytime.

Once or twice, I've picked up a book that looks interesting and started reading...de ja vu. It's usually a book that I didn't particularly enjoy the first time, and obviously it didn't make enough of an impression for me to even remember I read it. The book I'm listening to in the car is one like that. The ebook I did that with, I just stopped reading. It's actually taken me a long time to realize that I really don't have to finish books I don't enjoy. Unless they are for class or something

That being said, I don't remember "Timeline," but maybe it's one of those books for me...

To me, "Timeline" seemed like a book built with a "Plot Wheel". Crichton spun the wheel every chapter and just went with it.

I have read "the forever war" about 4 times at least, same with " I Lucifer" , I really enjoy rereading books maybe a year or too later but only if the book is first class(as the two I mentioned most definitely are). I have reread some Pratchett and King but that was only due to a lack of reading material at the time

I think I started Devices and Desires by KJ Parker three times before I managed to finish it. I actually devoured the rest of that trilogy after that.

The same goes for the Gunslinger. I thought it was pretty boring at first, but then decided to start again and keep reading. I'm sure glad I did, the rest of the series is amazing !

I just realized this morning that it's a lot like "The Perils of Pauline," with a cliff-hanger at the end of every chapter. I guess that's why I'm enjoying it this time. I already know that everyone will be OK at the end!
