Sedgwick, Catharine Maria: Slavery in New England. v1, 8th Dec 2016

Catharine Maria Sedgwick (1789-1867) was an American novelist and short story writer who wrote mainly "Domestic Fiction." Her work was popular from the 1820s to the 1850s, but by the end of the 19th century her work was hardly read. In the 1960s feminist scholars led renewed interest in her work.

She was born into a rich upper class Puritan family, and later joined the Unitarian Church. Her religious beliefs are often mentioned in her writings, including her acceptance and tolerance of the beliefs of others, and of people of other races.

As a child one of her carers had been Elizabeth Freeman, a former slave who had been helped to gain her freedom by Miss Sedgwick's father. This short ebook tells something of Miss Freeman's life and how she gained her freedom.

The text was taken from the Google ebook of 'Bentley's miscellany' which is poorly formatted and contains many spelling errors. I have silently corrected poor formatting and typos, curled quotes, replaced italics and diacritics, retained British English, made changes to spelling and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com, and checked the results against the manuscript text at the Massachusets Historical Society site.
