I'm not sure if that is the right description, but I read the Chronicle (First Login) series by Kevin Murphy and The Divine Dungeon (Dungeon Born) by Dakota Krout, and I really liked both of them and their follow-ups.

They basically follow a character in a D&D world as they progress from a weak starting character and level up. Kind of different from other D&D-type books I have read, which were basically straight fantasy.

Any other good books/series in this type of genre (I've also read Ready Player One, obviously)?

I really enjoyed Phil Tucker's Euphoria Online trilogy, starting with Death March.

I haven't read the books mentioned in the first post, so not sure if my recommendation is on the mark or not. But have you tried Quag Keep by Andre Norton?

Quote:
Quag Keep was the first novel based on the world of Dungeons & Dragons by the legendary grand mistress of SF/Fantasy, Andre Norton.

Once, they were role-playing gamers in our world.

They came from different places and different backgrounds.

Now they're summoned together by some magical force...to a land that mirrors the games they used to play.

Can they band together to unlock the secret of their summoning--and rescue from the legendary Quag Keep the person who may be able to return them home?

There is a sequel to that that is pretty hard to find. I think there is also a series of Bard's Tales books from Baen.

Do you mean Return to Quag Keep? It's available as an ebook, though reviews aren't kind.

It seems like the OP is looking for books where the mechanics of the game are more prominently on display than in a typical fantasy novel. In Quag Keep, the main characters are gamers who are sucked into the game. Are the Bard's Tale books similar?
