It's the news. Not the specific stories that are covered, but the way all news stories are covered.

The old movie Network doesn't feel like a satire anymore.

Nothing new.

Introduction to “Crisis of the Month

“Crisis of the Month” began with my wife’s griping about the hysterical manner in which the news media report on the day’s events. Veteran newscaster Linda Ellerbee calls the technique “anxiety news.” Back in journalism school (so long ago that spelling was considered important) I was taught that “good news is no news.” Today’s media takes this advice to extremes: no matter what the story, there is a down side to it that can be emphasized.

So when my darling and very perceptive wife complained about the utterly negative way in which the media presented the day’s news I quipped, “I can see the day when science finally finds out how to make people immortal. The media will do stories about the sad plight of the funeral directors.”

My wife recognizes an idea when she hears one, even if I don’t. She immediately suggested, “Why don’t you write a story about that?”

Thus the origin of “Crisis of the Month.”--Ben Bova

I may be weird, but I find calmness in watching other people being anxious. It's no problem finding anxiety victims to observe these days. With TDS, the hysterical media, etc. I used to actually hit the malls on Christmas Eve near closing. Not because I needed to buy any more gifts, but because of the relaxation I felt sitting in the fat comfy mall lounge chairs watching all the panicked people running around. I tend to avoid crowds at all costs, but if I do get caught up in one, I find it a great relief to mentally transport myself to be the one "alone in the crowd". Not having a Twitter or Facebook account helps a lot too. Heck, my cellphone is a flip phone as well.

You're really only as anxious as you allow yourself to be.

I wonder if it's a ploy to make people feel anxious and buy books on how to deal with anxiety.

Personally I feel pretty good. I know we are in interesting times but I have popcorn ready and am going to enjoy the show.

I'd go for that. Their first step would have to be re-enabling me to download the Nook books I purchased so I could keep local copies as backups (you know, in case B&N goes under, as we see could quite well happen). I did manage to get most of my books downloaded as local copies by jumping through all kinds of hoops, but I won't give B&N the time of day until they make it universally easy to download/backup your purchases. Anything less, and I'm not going to be one of the mourners shedding tears when they pass.

That would actually probably be a great advertising campaign...I just don't think the target audience would appreciate it.
