Post Dickens, Charles: Bleak House (Illustrated). v7. 21 Apr 2011

Description from Amazon:

As the interminable case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce grinds its way through the Court of Chancery, it draws together a disparate group of people: Ada and Richard Clare, whose inheritance is gradually being devoured by legal costs; Esther Summerson, a ward of court, whose parentage is a source of deepening mystery; the menacing lawyer Tulkinghorn; the determined sleuth Inspector Bucket; and even Jo, the destitute little crossing-sweeper. A savage, but often comic, indictment of a society that is rotten to the core, Bleak House is one of Dickens's most ambitious novels, with a range that extends from the drawing rooms of the aristocracy to the poorest of London slums.

Speaking on a personal level, I have to say that this is my favorite novel, by my favourite author. The first chapter's description of a foggy London has come to epitomise Victorian London for many. The characterisation is magnificent; the plots and sub-plots fascinating and complex. This is no easy read, but a novel which can be read and re-read for a lifetime, with each re-reading revealing new depths to it (which I guess is as good a definition of "great literature" as any).

This is a new version of the book, with the 40 original illustrations by "Phiz" and much better formatting than the previous versions, with dashes preserved.

Enjoy!

EDIT: v6, 22 Dec 07

Replaced words in capitals with italics, where appropriate, to match printed book. Uploaded v6.

EDIT: v7, 21 Apr 11

Thoroughly proof-read against the "Oxford Illustrated Dickens" edition. Many errors fixed, and a huge amount of missing punctuation (in the order of 20,000 items) added and corrected. All the illustrations have been re-scanned and are now of much better quality than before. Various things such as letters have been replaced with graphical versions, which look much better. I would now regard this as a "finished" version; if you find any remaining errors, now matter how small, please let me know. Uploaded v7.

Many thanks, Harry. I love all Dickens' works and really appreciate being able to re-visit so many thanks to your generous and expert conversion work. Best wishes. Neil

Thank you HarryT!

Just a question, why is the ePUB version so much smaller (3MB) than the Mobi (10MB)? Was the image quality reduced for the ePUB, or does the Mobi include multiple instances of the illustrations? (It seems the ePUB illustrations have been reduced in size)

It's because I've switched from "Mobi Creator" to "Kindlegen" to create the Mobi version, and my understanding is that Kindlegen inserts a copy of the complete HTML source into the file, roughly doubling its size. I don't know why it does this!

The ePub version has increased in size from 2.7 to 3.1MB for this version, due to the improved illustrations.

I'm sure you'll like the fact that it's now using "proper" paragraph indentations, rather than hard spaces .

That explains part of the size difference. But still, the images are different in both versions. The title illustration, for instance is 511x760 (50KB) in the Mobi, but 414x616 (30KB) in the ePUB. At least one of the converters is altering the source images, are you using some profile in calibre that might be resizing the images (I see many suspicious 501 widths and 616 heights)?

You're right - I don't know why it's doing that. It's definitely Calibre that's doing it.

I'll ask in the Calibre forum and see if anyone can tell me.

Uploaded a new version of the book with the correctly-sized images. In case it's of interest to anyone else, one disables image resizing in Calibre by selecting the "Tablet" output profile.

Thanks for pointing this issue out, Jellby.

You have total control of your book. For example, Sigil makes no changes to the images you include.

I appreciate that, but it doesn't really help when creating books in multiple formats. Should I wish to edit an ePub book, though, I'd certainly use it.

True. Sadly nothing replaces BookDesigner for multiple formats. I still use BookDesigner each time I start a new book.

You could create the main book as an ePUB and convert to the other formats with Calibre (or whatever)
