ISO639 language codes

Languages in Calibre are hardcoded to use ISO639 language codes on-demand. That is why you cannot invent your own, personal language codes for use in Edit Metadata.

Edit Metadata shows "previously used" language codes at the top of the dropdown list, then all of the "unused" languages sorted alphabetically below those from which you can select if desired.

If you look in metadata.db in tables languages and book-languages-link, you will find entries for the "previously used" language codes, but not for the "unused" language codes.

All language codes are available to be used if needed in all libraries, always. You just won't find them in a pre-loaded metadata.db table if they have never been needed. They're loaded from the software, not the db, when Calibre starts.
