Left pointing arrows in ebooks

Footnotes have a return link identified by a left-facing arrow. I would like to do the same for return links from illustrations.
I have added left arrows and included them in return links. Converting the Word file (.docx) I find that all the left arrows have disappeared! Is there a workaround, please?

Or footnotes may have [Back to Ch 11]

Do you mean a < or an actual arrow symbol? Actual symbols need the font included and may not work on a Kindle if Publisher Font isn't selected by the user. Also older Kindles only have the fonts already on the ereader, you can't embed.

A < would appear, but it's to small to tap on. You need a word or phrase for links so I never put just [1] but a few words [1] as the source link to the footnote.
If the same footnote is used more than once then it's repeated with the appropriate back link because most ereaders have no back button or function, only links.

Note a few readers don't even have links, so footnotes at chapter end rather than book end (Really Endnotes in textbook). Also if a note* is short?
[* just put it after paragraph like this]

??? This is news to me.

Usually footnotes just have a simple link back/forth.

One points to the footnote. The other points back to the text.

1. How did you convert your DOCX?

2. Are you using Calibre or what?

3. Are you doing DOCX->EPUB? Or are you doing something else?

4. Can you copy/paste the arrow from your DOCX and put it in this message?

Unicode has hundreds of thousands of different characters, and you may have accidentally chosen a very odd character that LOOKS like a left-pointing arrow:

but is actually intended for something very different.
