What Happened To Page 99 Test?

There used to be a website which would show a random page 99 from a book. After reading, you were asked if you would want to carry on reading that book.

There was the ability to make comments upon if and why you made your choice.

The link I have seems to be dead. Does anyone know if the site moved, or does it no longer exist?

No, that just appears to be a blog about someone's experience with the page 99 test. The original had a page on-screen which you could read, then say whether you would continue reading etc. It was possible to click a button for another page 99 from another book.

I saw the blog you've linked to before posting and found it very puzzling.

Unfortunately I thought that might be the case. It's a shame, that was a fun site.

If an ebook doesn't have page numbers, how do you estimate which is page 99, or its equivalent? Any ideas?

Use ePub with RMSDK an you'll get a page 99 that's the same page 99 no matter the settings.

If you have the URL we might be able to find it on the Wayback Machine at Archive.org — and maybe we could find out what happened to them.

The url which comes up when I hover over the old bookmark is:
http://page99test.com/

It doesn't work anymore, at least not in firefox.

July-2014 and Nov-2014 seems to be the latest copies on the Wayback machine. (Sometimes Wayback seems inclined to load more sometimes it doesn't, I don't really understand.) There are links there to Facebook, Twitter and various other places that might tell you more about what happened to it.

Doesn't come up in Chrome either, though Chrome shows that the connection was "refused." Archive.org was only able to come up with some of the past page99test backgrounds, I couldn't find any content at all.

Whois showed that the domain had been updated in July (last month) but it's registered through GoDaddy and it's private. So, whoever owns the domain name still owns it (and will own it until at least July, 2022. It's shows its nameservers as NS1 (and NS2 and NS3) at PARKLOGIC.COM. The Admin email is page99test.com@domainbyproxy.com (I seriously doubt you would get any response, I think this probably to enforce the privacy.) The good news is, the domain, page99test.com is not up for sale. So maybe there is a chance it will come back up.

Sorry the news couldn't be any better.

parklogic.com sounds like one of those spammy link farms

EDIT: And I'd guess it got DMCA'd to death

I kind of thought that as well, but then it doesn't make a lot of sense that they're refusing to connect.

http://page99test.com is redirecting to a garden-variety, suggested-links page typical of most parked-domain monetization schemes for me this morning.
