Version 6.0 does not load on Win8.1e

error message
"calibre
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be
initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Available platform plugins are: direct2d, minimal, offscreen, windows.

OK"

Reinstalling did not fix the issue.
Any fix for this please ?

Currently installed calibre-64bit-5.44.0


Also is there a 32bit version for 6 ?

You can fix the problem by upgrading to Windows 10 for free from Microsoft.

Calibre 6 will have no 32-bit version since QT6 is 64-bit only.

No, Win10 is not free. Not all versions of Win7 or 8 upgrade either. Even when the upgrade is available not all 64 bit HW is compatible.

Linux or a newer PC for Windows 11 is an option.

Yes Windows 10 is free. I've used that link about a year ago to update a computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

If the computer runs 64-bit Windows 8, it will run 64-bit Windows 10.

I had a Lenovo laptop that proves you wrong. It came with Win 8. I couldn't upgrade it to Win10 because the drivers didn't exist. My attempt came near to bricking the computer.

I have two friends who had the same problem with different laptop brands.

Anyway, "you can fix the problem by upgrading to Windows 10" sounds like "You can fix the problem by accepting a much bigger one", or "You can fix the problem by buying a new computer". Thousands of people have thousands of good reasons not to "upgrade" to windows10.
Being among them, I'm very disappointed by this non-compatibility and consider it as a major issue. It's a very contemptful move toward millions of users.

Follow-up: I have no choice but sticking to v5.44.0, but what will happen when a new upgrade will be made necessary for compatibility reasons with my reader, after a firmware upgrade? Will I have to give up using Calibre?

As long as Kobo sticks to the same database version in future firmware updates, you'll be good to go.
