G10.1 vs Thrive

I'm currently in the market for a tablet, which I will use to replace my Kindle. How is the Kindle app on these 2 devices? And since I used to have a Sony reader, can I download books from there too?
Thanks

I don't do Kindle, but I'm sure someone else will comment on that.

As for the Sony store, I still buy books there and use them on my GT 10.1. Of course, I strip the DRM first.

Aldiko handles Adobe DRM, so you should be able to read your books without stripping DRM. Aldiko is one of the nicer ebook readers in any case. There is a fully functional free version. I paid the $2 for the Premium version.

I'm keeping an eye on Mantano, but at this point, it still has some interface issues on a large tablet. If those are fixed in a later release and I can get another trial version, I may spring for the paid version.

It's rather annoying that the seven day trial applies even if you download a later bug fixed version. I can't adequately trial the software when the bug fix releases aren't all magically released in this short seven day window.

As for using the GT as an ereader, I love it. The display is probably the best of all the current tablets. And at 1.25 lbs, it is not overly tiring to hold for extended periods.

I prefer epub when I can get it, but the fact is that we still need to use PDF for some things. If your eyesight is good, you can actually read a full page PDF on the 10 inch screen without margin cropping. With margin cropping, I can easily read the PDF. I'm currenly using ezPDF, and like Aldiko, it is definitely worth the $2. Again, Mantano for reading PDF shows promise.

If you need the ports and expansion card options, then go for the Toshiba. If you just want a light and slim device, then go for the Samsung or Asus.

And sure, you can download the Sony reader for Android and access all your books from the Sony store.

Kindle for Android should work well for either device.

The Samsung has a better screen than the Thrive also. You might want to consider the Asus Transformer too (IPS Screen, slimmer than the Thrive).

I love my Transformer and I've only used the Galaxy Tab for a few minutes at a store, but if you want a light and slim device, I think the GT is your best bet. It's not just lighter, it also lacks the sharp edges of the TF, so I would think it's more comfortable to hold for longer periods of time.

By the way, there is a Sony reader app for Android, but it's unusable on tablets. The pages overlap.

One question to the owner of a Galaxy Tab 10.1:
Is it as "flimsy" as some reviews state?
I'm undecided between the slimmer 10.1 and the "older" 10.1v.
"Newer unit" vs. potentially flimsy...

I've got 3 Honeycomb tablets:
Xoom, Iconia, Eee Pad Transformer.
All 3 are absolutely identically re. Kindle app (and others like nook or Kobo).
I've got the Sony app on Xoom as well. But it's hardly usable, about 90% of the eBooks I bought for my Sony readers aren't available yet for download within the Sony app. It's easier to download the Sony books, strip them from DRM and use them in some other reader app.

Re. eBooks on tablets: I find most tablets to heavy for intense reading. Xoom definitely wouldn't be my replacement unit for Kindle. Personally, I still keep my Kindle DX Graphite: Battery, weight, contrast to name only a few arguments.
But if you want to get rid of your Kindle, replace it with a not so heavy and bulky tablet. Iconia for example would make sense.

I was a pretty staunch kindle reader, and but I must say the nook with cm7--gingerbread i've not picked up my Kindle. I do really miss not being able to read in sunlight but the nook does so much more and supports much more formats.

I did the opposite. I tried reading on my 5" phone and on my tablet computer exclusively for about 3 months. Finally I went back to my Irex. Reading on e-ink is just that much more comfortable for me. Formats don't really matter, I actually buy most of my books at Amazon and generally read using Mobi format in FBReader (because the formatting options don't work on epub). Everyone is different, therefore it is best to try it out.

A suggestion is to buy in ePub, strip the DRM do any fixing up you want to do and then use Aldiko to read. It's a lot easier that way then it is to buy from Amazon. ePub > Mobi (if that's what you want) is better then Mobi > ePub (overall). So really, don't get yourself stuck with a boat load of eBooks that someday you may want to convert to ePub.

I haven't seen where anyone called it "flimsy". It certainly is thin and light, but it doesn't flex or bend. The case is plastic, but seems plenty sturdy enough to me. I guess if you were expecting some exotic magnesium and/or titanium alloy, then you might think that the plastic was flimsy.

That is why I'm happy with my GT 10.1. I can hold it for extended periods of reading. See my comments elsewhere, where I compared the weight to a Nook Color - very little difference in weight. It actually feels lighter, since the weight is spread out a bit more.
