New York Times Caves, Gives Apple Its 30% Cut

Quote:
The New York Times has issued an update to its iOS apps today that now allows users to subscribe to paid content through in-app purchases. The change comes a day later than the June 30 deadline Apple imposed on subscription apps that must now provide a way for users to sign up without being redirected to a website.

That means, of course, that for every new subscriber the New York Times signs up, Apple receives 30% of their in-app purchase.
Quote:
Apple’s latest App Store guidelines, which went into force today, now demand that no application offers an external link enabling users to subscribe to content outside of Apple’s ecosystem. By implementing in-app purchases and removing any links to external subscription, it seems the New York Times is happy to adobe by this rule, whereas other apps have decided to avoid the App Store altogether.

Wow. Can't you just log in to NYtimes through the browser, as you would on any computer? Apple gets a cut for that?

No, Apple only gets a cut of purchases made through the App.

oh. so this only applies when people access their paid NYT subscription via the NYT app. Or, order it through the app, as opposed to ordering it through the browser and then using the app to access it. either way, I lost interest halfway through typing that.

"... it seems the New York Times is happy to adobe by this rule, ..."

So it only applies to PDFs?

Why doesn't NYT just not have a app and do everything through the browser??? can someone explain me why the NYT even has an app now...given the steep 30% cut apple gets? Any technical reasons?

Technically, Pinch isn't very bright and can be counted on to make decisions that reflect poorly on the competency and integrity of the institution that he inherited.

All the nepotism thats unfit to be a printer.

I suspect a certain Mexican billionaire shall foreclose on the Old Gray Lady around 2014, if there is still anything left of it.

no, you can't. How else can Apple make their fortune if they can't re-create the web in the App Store for 99 cents a page?
