A lot depends on who's on the copyright holders' shit-lists though. They went after Hotfile and Megaupload even though both sides not only honored DMCA notices, but also had built special tools to allow copyright holders to take down infringing links without going through the DMCA process.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Your point about the difference being the "type of site" rings true. So also your feeling (knowledge?) that copyright holders have sh*t-lists of particular websites that they hate.

Ebook from MIT Press on Open Access--Available FREE, as a Pdf, through Open Access.

Ordinarily, I would just go ahead and post this kind of book on the "non-fiction" thread. However, because of the discussion that we have had on this thread in the last couple of days about matters related to the subject of this book, I am posting it on this thread. And being DRM-Free, it meets the requirements.

This ebook about open access is available free due to, well, open acess. It's not free at Amazon, however--their digital mobi of this book is $9.99 there.

Title: Open Access (MIT Press Essential Knowledge Series).
Format: Pdf.
Author(s): Peter Suber.
Publisher: MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Press.
Pages: xii + 242.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon):
Price: $0.00.
Kindle Mobi Price at Amazon, if available: $9.99.
Book Description (Amazon):
The Internet lets us share perfect copies of our work with a worldwide audience at virtually no cost. We take advantage of this revolutionary opportunity when we make our work "open access": digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. Open access is made possible by the Internet and copyright-holder consent, and many authors, musicians, filmmakers, and other creators who depend on royalties are understandably unwilling to give their consent. But for 350 years, scholars have written peer-reviewed journal articles for impact, not for money, and are free to consent to open access without losing revenue. In this concise introduction, Peter Suber tells us what open access is and isn't, how it benefits authors and readers of research, how we pay for it, how it avoids copyright problems, how it has moved from the periphery to the mainstream, and what its future may hold. Distilling a decade of Suber's influential writing and thinking about open access, this is the indispensable book on the subject for researchers, librarians, administrators, funders, publishers, and policy makers.

The Wildside Press freebie for this Tuesday is:

Search the Sky by the late SFWA Grandmaster Frederik Pohl (ISFDB, Wikipedia) & the also-late C. M. Kornbluth (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a vintage science fiction novel originally out from Ballantine Books in 1954. Incidentally, Pohl also had an excellent blog about early science fiction fandom & industry history which is being maintained by his family, and quite a number of his novels (and his very entertaining autobiography) are available DRM-free via Baen Books at affordable prices.

Search the Sky is a satirical science fiction novel written by Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth and first published in 1954.

What is the fate of the colonists who went out from Earth to settle the far planets beyond our universe? Spaceships have been unable to evoke responses from these planets, and in a novel as well-written as it is ingenious, one man starts out from Halsey's Planet to find the answer. If there is one.

Also, a reminder that the Humble Comics Bundle Image Creators Own Worlds featuring a good many award-nominated creator-owned comics and graphic novels expires tomorrow at 11 AM Wednesday.

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:

Humble Book Bundle Origami Yoda featuring the titular best-selling series of children's novels by Tom Angleberger, starring a young boy with said origami figure of Yoda as some kind of imaginary friend with whom he has Star Wars-referential adventures in between coping with school difficulties. Incidentally, if you wanted to fold your own Origami Yoda, there are instructions on the official website here.

Current average is under $9, top-tier is $15, the bundle will run for 2 weeks but doesn't seem like it'll have anything extra added next week.

Quote:
A New Origami. A long time ago, origami was mainly in the shape of swans or flowers, but then Tom Angleberger came along with Origami Yoda, teaching the wise ways of taking paper and turning it into a colorful cast of characters fit for a space opera!

Pay what you want for The Strange Case of Origami Yoda.

Pay more than the average price to also receive The Surprise Attack of Jabba the Puppett, The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee, and Darth Paper Strikes Back.

Pay $15 for all of that plus Emperor Pickletine Rides the Bus and Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue.
Also, the Humble Audiobook Bundle: Smart Fun! The Best of National Public Radio has updated with at least 2 new titles (maybe 3) at the middle tier, including more funny stories and an interesting-sounding self-documentary series where a group of teens recorded their lives for NPR, and then 16 years later, revisited their recordings and talk about how their lives turned out and expectations were met or not, etc.

The new Humble Bundle is for:

Humble Book Bundle 3D Printing & Drones presented by Make:, chock-full of DIY books and special magazine issues about Exactly What It Says In The Title from the popular tech crafts hobbyist magazine. A couple of the pay-what-you-want books are repeats, but much of the bundle is new, and includes a discount coupon for a subscription to the magazine.

Current better-than-average is just under $12 with more titles to be added next week, top tier is $15.

Quote:
The Humble Book Bundle: 3D Printing & Drones presented by MAKE:

It's the world of tomorrow... today! If you were a science fiction writer in the '50s and predicted a world of 3D printing and drones, well, ya nailed it! Now, not only can you buy drones and products made from 3D printers, but you can make them yourself, and MAKE: has created the books to help you out.

Pay what you want for LEO the Maker Prince: Journeys in 3D Printing, Make: Volume 37: Homegrown Drones, Make: Volume 44: Enter the Drone Zone, and 21st Century Robot.

Pay more than the average price to also receive Make: Volume 12: Invasion of the Blimp Bots; The Makerspace Workbench: Tools, Technologies, and Techniques for Making; Best of Make: Volume 2: 65 Projects and Skill Builders from the Pages of Make:; Make: 3D Printing: The Essential Guide to 3D Printers; and The Maker's Manual: A Practical Guide to the New Industrial Revolution.

Pay $15 or more for all of that plus Design for 3D Printing: Scanning, Creating, Editing, Remixing, and Making in Three Dimensions; From the Pages of Make: Planes, Gliders, and Paper Rockets; Getting Started with Drones: Build and Customize Your Own Quadcopter; and 3D Printing Projects: Toys, Bots, Tools, and Vehicles to Print and Build Yourself.
StoryBundle also has a new bundle, good for the next couple of weeks:

Women in Fantasy curated by former Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction editor and successful multi-genre author Kristine Kathryn Rusch (ISFDB, Wikipedia).

This contains a number of both backlist and recently-written fantasy novels across various subgenres from epic high fantasy to urban to comedic, by established women fantasy authors, including Judith Tarr (ISFDB, Wikipedia; one of my personal favourites for historical fantasy, though her offering in this is for epic high), Baen author P.N. Elrod (ISFDB, Wikipedia; probably better known for her vampire detective stuff), and more.

At the $5 minimum level, you get 4 novels + 1 anthology.

At the $15 top-tier level, you get an additional 5 novels, including Elrod's 2003 Baen-published humorous comedy-of-errors anthropomorphic wizard fantasy, Rusch's 1993 ROC-published revenge drama high fantasy, and the 2002 Tor-published 6th installment in Tarr's epic fantasy Avaryan Rising multi-generational saga.

And Humble Book Bundle Origami Yoda from the popular series of Star Wars-influenced kids/YA schoolboy adventure novels from last week is still available.

New Wildside Press freebie for this Tuesday is:

My Lady Greensleeves by the late SFWA Grandmaster Frederik Pohl (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a vintage short science fiction novel originally published in Galaxy Magazine in 1957.

This guard smelled trouble and it could be counted on to come--because a nose for trouble is one of the many talents bred in the prisons of the future! A classic short novel by Grand Master Frederik Pohl.

To celebrate their moving to a newer and more reliable webhost, Weightless Books is offering free-with-purchase through February 29th a 4-issue subscription to Small Beer Press' magazine Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet. The freebie will be credited to your account in March, according to their blog page for the offer.

Any e-book bought from Weightless' catalogue will qualify, but the one currently on sale which looks the niftiest is:

Letters to Tiptree edited by Alexandra Pierce & Alisa Krasnostein, for just 99 cents from Twelfth Planet Press (regular $6.99). This is a collection of letters written to groundbreaking pioneer sfnal author James Tiptree Jr., aka Alice Sheldon (ISFDB, Wikipedia) from prominent sfnal authors, including Aurora Award-winning Canadian Elisabeth Vonarburg, Hugo & Nebula-winning Rachel Swirsky, Ursula K. Le Guin, etc.

In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Alice Sheldon’s birth, and in recognition of the enormous influence of both Tiptree and Sheldon on the field, Twelfth Planet Press is publishing a selection of thoughtful letters written by science fiction and fantasy’s writers, editors, critics and fans to celebrate her, to recognise her work, and maybe in some cases to finish conversations set aside nearly thirty years ago.

StoryBundle has a new bundle up for the next two weeks, and it's for:

The Mega Game Bundle containing another set of books mostly about classic video games.

$3 minimum gets you 4 non-fiction titles, including a collection of articles from some gaming magazine, a couple of books about game design, and one retrospective of classic games.

$12 top tier gets you another 4+1 titles including a graphic novel originally funded by Kickstarter, a retrospective of another classic game, an collection of magazine articles exploring the indie game scene, and a 2-in-1 volume of articles and interviews about the Japanese gaming industry.

As a reminder, the Humble Book Bundle 3D Printing & Drones presented by Make: expires tomorrow on Wednesday at 11 AM Pacific Time and they've added what looks like 3 more topical back issues of the magazine to the middle tier. And the Humble Comics Bundle Best-Selling Authors presented by Dynamite runs for another week and contains several graphic novel adaptations of series franchises by popular sfnal authors, including Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, Dean Koontz, and George R. R. Martin.

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:

Humble Book Bundle Sci-Fi Classics from Brick Tower Press/ibooks containing a goodly chunk of Exactly What It Says In The Title, with volumes including some Roger Zelazny and the franchise spin-offs of his Amber series, a couple of Isaac Asimov robot collections, a few of George R. R. Martin's Wild Cards shared world anthologies, Alfred Bester etc.

Current average is under $10 but fluctuating (more books to be added next week; hopefully a few women writers will be among them if they have them in their catalogue, since it is a little unbalanced otherwise), top tier is $15. This is an auto-buy for me at the top tier, so I'm not going to bother to wait to see if the average drops all that much.

Quote:
Otherworldly treasures for your Earthly device. From many of the masters of sci-fi -- such as Alfred Bester, Roger Zelazny, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, George R.R. Martin -- comes a bundle of classic science fiction ready to take your imagination on an adventure.

Pay what you want The Last Defender of Camelot, Dragonworld, The Deceivers, Wild Cards Deuces Down, Roger Zelazny's The Dawn of Amber, and Damnation Alley.

Pay more than the average price to also receive The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth; Eye of Cat; The Computer Connection; Wild Cards Death Draws Five; Roger Zelazny's Chaos in Amber; Roger Zelazny's To Rule in Amber; and Robot Visions.

Pay $15 or more for all of that plus Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime 1, The Demolished Man, Roger Zelazny's Shadows of Amber, Robot Dreams, and The Stars My Destination.

New Wildside Press freebie for this Tuesday:

If You Was A Moklin by the late Murray Leinster (ISFDB, IMDB, Wikipedia), a vintage science fiction short which originally appeared in Galaxy Magazine in 1951, with accompanying audio.

"If You Was a Moklin" is a classic short story by Murray Leinster, originally published in Galaxy Magazine, September 1951. This ebook contains not only the text of the story, but the complete 1956 radio adaptation as originally aired on X Minus One! (Important note: Audio is not available in the Kindle version, just the .pdf and epub.)

The inhabitants of the planet Moklin may be the most dangerous race every encountered by humanity. In 40 years of trading with them, they have been nothing less than friendly and wildly enthusiastic about mankind. They are even beginning to look like humans...

As special bonus features, this version also includes a lengthy introduction about the author Murray Leinster.

Also a reminder that StoryBundle's The Women in Fantasy Bundle, full of backlist and recently-written works by established women fantasy novelists expires in couple of days, and the Humble Comics Bundle Best-Selling Authors presented by Dynamite expires tomorrow on Wednesday at 11 AM Pacific Time, if you've been on the fence about acquiring either of them.

New Wildside Press freebie for this Tuesday:

The Poul Anderson Minipack™ by the late Poul Anderson (ISFDB, Wikipedia) is a mini-collection of two of his vintage science fiction tales.

The Poul Anderson MINIPACK™ presents 2 classic tales by a Grand Master: INNOCENT AT LARGE, by Poul and Karen Anderson, and INSIDE EARTH, by Poul Anderson alone.

Also, a reminder that the Humble Book Bundle Sci-Fi Classics expires tomorrow at 11 AM Pacific Time, if you still haven't decided whether or not you want it. Another vintage Alfred Bester novel, and a licensed Arthur C. Clarke tie-in were added to the middle tier last week.

Also expiring soon, StoryBundle's The Mega Game Bundle of behind the scenes mostly non-fiction about the gaming industry and nostalgic looks at classic games. The True Crime Mini Bundle of also non-fiction about Exactly What It Says In The Title is good for another week.

Humble Bundle's current 2nd books bundle offering is not actually DRM-free, but only watermarked, and there's an offer for a free sampler set of some of the guidebooks in what looks like a very popular RPG series, so I thought I'd mention it here:

Humble RPG Book Bundle Pathfinder Roleplaying Game offers a set of three supplementary books for the series (gives you a key to redeem at the website); scroll down and enter your email address in the box.

If you're interested in completely DRM-free RPG guidebooks, Bundle of Holding is offering Castles & Crusades from Troll Lord Games for the next week, containing the various guides and supplements for a fantasy RPG series. There's a minimum tier and a top tier (can't up your pledge later, so be sure of which one you really want).

New Wildside Press freebie for this Tuesday is up:

The Second Rufus King Mystery Minipack™ by the late Rufus King (Wikipedia), featuring 2 vintage mystery shorts from the 1920s.

More Rufus King! He created the Lt. Valcour series of mystery novels, and enjoyed a broad popular following from the 1930s through the 1960s.

This ebook contains 2 stories: “The Man Who Didn’t Exist” (1925) and “The Weapon That Didn’t Exist” (1926).

Last week's Poul Anderson Minipack still seems to be free, in case you missed it earlier.

StoryBundle has a new 2016 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Nano Bundle good for the next two weeks, containing indie-written titles that were produced for previous NaNoWriMo events.

Minimum is $3 for 3 books, top-tier is $10 for an additional 4 books.

Also, their True Crime Mini Bundle of non-fiction expires in a couple of days' time. Similarly, the Humble RPG Book Bundle Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, while not quite DRM-free (watermarked, but otherwise free to download/transfer at will) ends tomorrow at 11 AM Pacific Time on Wednesday, and there's a freebie offer for several guidebooks in the very popular gaming system right on the bundle page, as well as the accompanying tie-in Humble Comics Bundle Pathfinder presented by Dynamite which expires next week.

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:

Humble Audiobook Bundle Lord of the Rings, featuring DRM-free mp3s of all three titles in the trilogy, as well as The Hobbit and two tie-in scholarly things, all presented by Recorded Books.

ETA: AnemicOak points out in the Audiobooks mega-thread that these are abridged dramatizations originally aired on National Public Radio, not full-novel readings, if that makes any difference to you.

Current average is around $9, top-tier is $15 to get all three actual LOTR books, which is what you're probably going for anyway (though if you already have them, you can get just The Hobbit and one of the tie-ins at the pay-what-you-want minimum tier), no additional titles to be added next week, but available for the next 14 days.

Quote:
One bundle to rule them all. Perhaps you started with the books, or was it the movies? Either way, the next step is venturing into the world of fully dramatized versions of the Tolkien classics!

Pay what you want for The Modern Scholar: Tolkien and the West: Recovering the Lost Tradition of Europe and The Hobbit.

Pay more than the average price to also receive The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings, The Return of the King, and The Fellowship of the Ring.

Pay $15 of more for all of that plus The Two Towers.
Also, Apex Magazine is hosting a Kickstarter for a new anthology of theirs: Upside Down: Inverted Tropes In Storytelling, which has another 16 days to go and has very nearly hit their goal.

As one of the add-ons available at any level for $30 is a bundle of issues #1-78 of the magazine, working out to a cost of roughly 40 cents per issue. The actual anthology can be gotten for a $5 pledge level, and there are e-book bundle pledge levels for other works by the featured authors and/or previous anthologies for the magazine, at various price points.

The new Wildside Press freebie for this Tuesday (which should be good until maybe the afternoon tomorrow, since they usually put these things up after noon) is:

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by the late Agatha Christie (no Wikipedia linkage for her, since you already should know who she is), the 1st novel in her Hercule Poirot detective series, with The Secret Adversary, the 1st novel in her Tommy & Tuppence series as a bonus. These are the two novels of hers which fall into the US public domain under the old rules, but Wildside has added some minor bonus material in the form of a few period reviews and a short write-up about dramatic adaptations and contextual introductions to both novels, if you're interested.

Here is a special edition of The Mysterious Affair at Styles, by Agatha Christie -- the first Hercule Poirot novel -- and it's packed with extras, like reviews, a list of adaptations, an introduction, and a complete bonus novel...The Secret Adversary, first in the Tommy and Tuppence series!

As a reminder, the Humble Comics Bundle Pathfinder presented by Dynamite, chock-full of tie-ins and supplementary material to the highly popular fantasy RPG, expires tomorrow on Wednesday at 11 AM Pacific Time. And the Humble Audiobook Bundle Lord of the Rings containing the National Public Radio adaptations of the entire trilogy + The Hobbit, and two scholarly non-fiction tie-ins about Tolkien's works and life, will still be available for the next week (but won't have any bonus books added to it tomorrow as HBs usually do).

The new Wildside Press freebie for this Tuesday is:

A Stranger in Paradise by Edward M. Lerner (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a mini-collection of his science fiction stories.

A Stranger in Paradise, by Edward M. Lerner, collects five of the bestselling author's science fiction stories:
  • The Night of the RFIDs
  • Two kinds of People
  • Better the Devil You Know
  • Small Business
  • A Stranger in Paradise

StoryBundle has a new offering up for the next 2 weeks:

The Weird Horror Bundle presented by publisher Lazy Fascist Press, containing works of horror-leaning speculative weird fiction, including works by multi-time winners of the Bram Stoker Award such as Brian Keene and John Skipp, as well as authors who have been nominated for other sfnal genre awards, such as the British Fantasy and Wonderland Awards.

$5 minimum gets you 5 titles (3 novels + 1 story collection + 1 story collection with author's notes about the creative process of writing), $14 top-tier nets you an additional 4 titles (3 novels + 1 poetry collection). Unlike Humble Bundle, there doesn't seem to be a way to top up your pledge, so please be sure of which tier you want before purchasing.

Also, their 2016 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Nano Bundle, containing indie works written for NaNoWriMo, ends in another couple of days.

Also ending soon, Humble Audiobook Bundle Lord of the Rings containing the National Public Radio dramatic adaptations of the LOTR trilogy, The Hobbit, and two non-fiction works about Tolkien, which expires tomorrow, Wednesday at 11 AM Pacific Time. And award-nominated Apex Magazine's Kickstarter for their new anthology Upside Down: Inverted Tropes in Storytelling, which offers as one of the add-ons for an extra $30 issues #1-78 of the magazine (less than 40 cents per issue!) ends in another few days. The anthology itself is only a $5 basic pledge, and there are relatively low-cost bundles which add extra ebooks from the contributing authors and/or Apex's previous anthologies at various levels.

And if you happen to like SFnal roleplaying games, Bundle of Holding has two offerings for the next couple of weeks: PARANOIA CLASSIC, apparently bringing into PDF form some highly popular old school 80s humorous futuristic sci-fi RPG, and OpenQuest, some sort of fantasy RPG inspired by something called RuneQuest.

StoryBundle has a new offering for the next 3 weeks, which is an auto-buy for me:

The Aurora Award Bundle curated by Aurora Award-winner and fellow Canadian author Douglas Smith (ISFDB), featuring a whole slew of finalists and winners for our top national sfnal prize (Wikipedia).

These aren't just the nominated authors in here, but their actual works which got the nominations, and it includes some very nifty backlist stuff by also-Hugo Award-winner Robert J. Sawyer and other notable Canadians like Dave Duncan (published by DAW), Candas Jane Dorsey (published by Tor), Sean Stewart (published by Ace), and more.

$5 minimum gets you 3 novels + 2 collections.

$15 top tier gets you another 4 novels + 1 collection.

I'd highly recommend this if you think you might be interested in Canadian speculative fiction and/or high-quality backlist works. Also, StoryBundle's Weird Horror Bundle is still available for the next week or so.

Also, the new Humble Bundle for this week is for Dark Horse's tie-in comics to the Buffy: the Vampire Slayer and Angel: the Series TV shows. More details in the Comics megathread.

And Bundle of Holding has added a new offering for HackMaster, a comedic fantasy parody RPG based upon some sort of story-within-a-story for the Knights of the Dinner Table comic book series. Their two other sfnal RPG bundles are still available for the next couple of days.
