You can use EB Garamond to check. It has very good, handmade hinting. Removing them drastically improves rendering on eInk with small sizes. It is an absolutely gorgeous typeface too. I believe it is one of the best free typefaces out there together with Libre Baskerville.

Here it is without hints and correctly named: http://drop.muratcansimsek.com/EBGaramond.zip
Those links don't work for me. Any chance of updating them? Just downloaded the regular version of EBGaramond, and it looks as if it needs exactly what you did to it!

I have been working on a new test version of Charis SIL. Please have a look and let me know what you think. The new version is based on a newer version of Charis SIL. It has added weight, fixed metrics so it works well with Kobo & Kindle, and some kerning. Thanks.

Look for the last attachments in the thread for the latest test versions.

What's the recommended angle for Italic/oblique font? in FontForge the default it's (-13).

as far as i can remember in technical writings italic should be -15 (75 degrees). That is old measurement, may be something is changed in the meantime.

How did you access the embedded font PANOSE info to edit them?

Using fontforge, or in my case, my own little GUI interface to fontforge to change them.

In fontforge, go Element > Font info > OS/2 > Panose

Set yer OS/2...

Hi Folks,

Just another little nugget of wisdom(???).

So it turns out that the OS/2 table (not just PANOSE!) is kind of important. Applications (and Windows) can get all confused if the OS/2 fsSelection field (style basically), and usWeightClass (font weight) don't match the rest of the font.

It's quite ridiculous to see just how many different ways there are to specify font names and styles in a single font! And there's nothing stopping conflicting values from occurring either.

Sigh... another thing added to my font modifier program (which I'll release someday.... promise!)

Goudy Old Style is an awesome font (see the link on page 1) for an ereader. You'd never guess it was so good looking at it in Windows.

It's displaced Georgia as my font of choice. It's just that bit neater and cleaner than Georgia.

Highly recommended (I add a bit of a weight to it via the .conf file to make it better).

You can get Bookerly from one of the Kindle firmware updates that includes it. But, there is a glitch in the metadata of the bold italic version that you'll need to fix.

Yes I believe that is being adressed in the instructions of the URL I posted

Also no need to reverse engineer the Kindle update. There is a zip-file provided.
