What is the best color ereader tat is not crazy expensive?

A survey would not do. There are too many possible answers and either some will be missed or there will not be enough space all the possible answers.

I can say why I do. This is not in any order.

More portable as I prefer a larger tablet
Larger screen then my phone
No distractions popping up on screen
Much better battery then a phone or a tablet
Better reading in daylight
Better eBook organization
Able to carry more eBooks without needing the storage for other things

My iPhone is the 2nd more use device I have for reading.

So though Kaleido 3 might claim 300 dpi mono, it's really 150 dpi both directions, all the time.

The kaleido 3 might be better for comics, but the older screen might be better for text, but only if it has subpixel addressing (like cleartype) and thus really only one axis as subpixel addressing is more effective on text across the vertical stripes than along horizontal stripes.

Otherwise the panel on Inkpad Color 2 and Onyx mini C are going to have the similar range of about 4000 pastel shades.

Minor nit being the latest eInk colour panels do not use a CFA and give a full 300 DPI whether in colour or greyscale. Slower than molasses but that's the trade off.

A Led bulb that shines on a white surface is cheaper; a white piece of paper in the sun is still considerably cheaper

I like to have a good looking screen. Color eInk is not it. I should not have to use the front-light to fix the inherent problems in the screen.

The solution is you don't buy a color eInk screen. You buy an eInk Reader with a good screen and color eInk is not it.

A lit Boox Tab Mini C screen is the best 7.8 inch I've ever seen, but not only because of the picture quality but mainly because of the Super Refresh technology - and 7.8 inches with this technology are only available in C.

And I don't give a damn about the $2 yearly overhead for lighting

While it may be the best color eInk Reader, it's a lot overpriced and it's not good at B&W without the light being on.
