Will Cuppy (1884-1949) was an American journalist and humorist, whose great strength was writing very funny but factual articles. He was also something of a loner, and set up a shanty on an sandy island off Long Island where he lived from 1921-29. When the area became part of the Jones Beach State Park, Cuppy was given a special dispensation to keep his shack, and he visited it regularly until his death.

This book was a best-seller, racing through 6 printings in 4 months, describing his life as a self-avowed hermit.
