Amazon Kindle/tablet to feature dual screens?
It's just a rumor, but an interesting concept. Here's the link:

This doesn't appeal to me somehow.

I could like that idea. I can definitely see some practical uses for a double screen. Foreign language students, for example, could make use of the double screens by having foreign language text and a translation side by side.

I had the Entourage PocketEdge dual screen reader for a short time but returned it for a variety of reasons. It was quite heavy (about 24 oz) and the battery life was limited. Even if you shut off the LCD screen and used only the e-ink side, the battery would only last about 11 hours, and much less if you used the LCD screen either by itself or in combination with the e-ink screen. Amazon may find a way to lengthen the battery life, but still you'll only have a few hours compared to a few weeks with an e-ink reader.
Still, it's an interesting concept if it's done correctly. SteveK |

If real and not vaporware, price I think will be the ultimate measure of success of such a device.
I could see the utility of this - just not sure whether I would want one. |

I've got an iPad and was toying with the idea of getting an eInk reader. Mainly for reading because I do so little reading on the iPad. But I don't think I'd lug both of them around. Even if they were joined at the hips.

How about this - on one side, you have the LCD screen. On the other (the back) you have e-ink. Just flip it over.
Okay, probably really fragile, but...still a terrible idea |

I rather like the idea... Naturally, I doubt it can be done correctly, not at this point of time. Partly because of weight and battery life, but I think the concept is nice.

I was thinking the same thing until I thought about having to read something technical and looking it up on the other screen. Flipping back and forward would not be ideal.

How about two detachable screens? If you only want to take the eink screen with you, you could. If you want both screens, you could.
Maybe you could be reading on eink and in the next screen there could be a book club chat app, so that people could discuss and talk while reading the book. Maybe you're in the mood to read some comic books, so you only take the lcd screen with you. There's lots of possibilities. It certainly will be more affordable that buying separate eink reader and tablet pc. |

Terrible, terrible idea:
- Try turning an iPad round a few times. Because they're thin, they're very unbalanced on that axis and difficult to hold securely using the edges. Lots of risk of dropping the thing. - How do you stop the screen facing downwards from getting scratched? The only way I can see being successful, is to keep the device permanently in a padded jacket, immediately eliminating any usefulness of having two screens. - I can't see this costing less than the combined price of an eink reader and tablet, and that combo allows you to hold the two side-by-side to, for example, read a book on the eink screen and look up words/concepts on the 'net using the tablet. |

Two batteries, two processors, two AC adapters if you want to charge them both at the same time, three cases (one for each if they are separate, one for when they are together), RAM for each, etc.

I have a Pocket Edge and I like it very much. If Amazon made this I would totally buy it, given that it would have Amazon behind it. That is, if it followed the Edge model of the two screens communicating, etc.
