hmm.. didn't know apple stores didn't accept cash, but i've never tried to buy in the store with cash.

but what i don't get, is if she has a fixed income, no home computer already, could barely afford an ipad, how was she going to get net access? mcdonalds?

the store's policy is just plain stupid.

This has been their policy for a while - it started with one of the iPhones. It gives them a way to enforce the "x devices per customer" rule to prevent people from buying scads of them to sell overseas.

If I was an Apple Store employee, I'd just pull the customer aside and say "psst....Best Buy takes cash."

Seems somehow illegal for a store not to take cash. (U.S. perspective!) Legal tender is......legal tender, yes?

They'll take cash - I think they're supposed to follow the 2 per customer limit, but unless you're going up to the cash register with an armload of iPads, I don't think they worry about it too much.

That just seems so idiotic when many people are less trusting of banks and trying to get away from using creditcards as much that they would refuse to sell it to her.

They will not take cash as they can not track how many iPads a person purchases with it. Someone could hit 5 Apple Stores and get 10 iPads in 1 day. They could then turn arround and sell them at a minimum of 100% markup to people outside of the U.S. .

This will only last until the iPad is launched in all of the countries where Apple does business.

They will not accept Apple Gift cards for iPads either. You can however use cash for all other purchases except iPhones.

Lo and behold, Apple has changed their no cash for iPads policy (and given a free iPad to the woman featured in the story). You can pay cash now if you set up an Apple online account at the time of purchase.

Maybe if someone with a sufficiently hard-luck story regarding the iPad's lack of Flash goes to the news media, they'll relent on that too.

I recall DirecTV doing this as well. Back in the "grey market" days people would be buying dozens of dishes and re-selling or shipping them to Canada. Eventually, DTV started making stores get a credit card and proof of US address.

I'm glad to hear that that woman got her iPad. Especially a free one. While I understand the view of limiting purchases, There should be a means for people to pay cash. Which there is, now. Good on her.
